Cimarron 45/75
« on: May 06, 2014, 09:31:20 PM »
Old eyes have me looking for a different sight system for my 1876. Have looked at Smith ladders and several different Tang style sights. Any thoughts on what models front and rear would be helpful. Is it true that Uberti Tangs sights for the 73 also fit the 76?

Hello Postman63.  I use a Lyman 17 front and Marbles rear.  Specifically, the front is a 17AHB.  If this combination of sights is of interest to you, I'm sure I can look up the specific part numbers on the Marbles rear.

For my old eyes, I use a Marbles rear and the BUF Arms # is MAR991001 and the front site is--so I broke tradition---a Trijicon site with a green insert.  These I can see!
When in doubt, mumble!

Took the gun to the range to fire form brass. had 50 rounds loaded with Pyrodex and 50 with Shockey Gold. Loaded both with enough powder to compress about 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch. equivalent to about 68 grains of black powder measuring by volume. Both shot well, but the Pyrodex left a lot of residue. The Shockey Gold burned very cleanly for a BP replacement. Lots of smoke so it looks cool too. Groups were about 8 inches at 100 yards. This without any work on the trigger or change in sights. I think it will do very good after smoothing up the trigger and putting on a Verneer style sight. I read on Pyrodex web site to use 50/50 water/vinegare to break down the powder residue, soak brass for 10 Minutes, then brush out and soak and rinse in water bath to dilute the vinegare. do not use the vinegar on your Uberti rifle for cleaning, the acid will remove blueing if it sits on it for any time. I luckily noticed this in a very tiny spot on the muzzle end when cleaning. wont do that again. :P

Went back out to the range, shot off of a lead sled. got 4 inch groups at 100 yards with the Shockey Gold. took the Crony with and found muzzle velocity ran from 1350 to 1410 ft. per sec. Am ordering the Lyman 17AHB front sight and a marbles tang next week. My research found the Marbles improved base #991001 with screw set #995006 should work. A standard post should work for most shooting, with a Mid-range for longer shots. Headed to hunt Bison with it in November, should be a blast.....no pun intended.  ;)
