Lawdog,

My father was drafted in August of 1942. He was 23 yrs. old at the time.
He was brought into the 29th Infantry Division as a BAR man. But the only firearm he ever saw a Broom stick.
He requested a transfer to the Army Air Coup and was sent to the 29th fighter Squadron 15th. Air force on their way to Panama.
He remand there for 3 and a half years before being shipped back to the States.
He Retired in Aug, of 1972 with 30 years of Honorable service.
Both Dad and Mom are buried in Arlington National Cemetery!
My best,
Blair

Mornin’.

Fifty sumthin’ goin’ ta sixty sumthin’. Sky’s kinda dark ‘n the guessers say this afternoon it’ll start. From the looks of the forecast, the Fifth Dimension’s Rainmaker left Kansas ‘n came here. Kinda soggy thru Thirsday.

When crap happens like that, Maj, at my advanced years, I’d be best off ta ground the offendin’ revolver ‘n eat the miss. At this stage of the game it’d take me more’n five ta snatch the empty, load ‘n index the thing. Kinda opposed ta killin’ the shot at a clean shoot but reality is what it is. Screwed up the first stage Thursday past but did manage to shoot the next five clean.

Blair, My Dad was going through pilot training when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was going through advanced training at Eglin Field while they Tokyo Raiders were training there. It was all top secret back and he wasn't told anything until after till after the Raid. He was shipped to North Africa in Oct. 1942. The Free French AF flew fighter escort for them when they first got there.

Lawdog,

Dad was trained as an Ordnance Man in the AAF.
He had the chance to work on all the fighters in use at the time, P-38, P-40, P-47 and P-51's. Along with the light, B-25 and B-26 and heavy, B-17, B-24 and B-29's Bombers.
They apparently had a large ground crew training facility set up in the Canal Zone along with the aircraft that may have been needed to help protect the Canal if an attack came.
I was rather surprised at the large number and variety of aircraft he worked on.
My best,
Blair

We are privileged to have the  CAFs B-24 and B-29 at the Vintage Flight Museum in Fort Worth. The museum was home to a privately owned B-17 till it was sold. We have a A-26 that belongs to the CAF, a privately owned B-25 and a A-26K as well.

Blair, that's interesting about the training area set up in the Canal Zone. I remember reading somewhere that they didn't have that many front line aircraft there, If I recall what I read, they were still using B-18s for patrolling, at least for a while after they were all either destroyed and or withdrawn from combat after the opening days of the war, and used P-40s throughout the war.

53 and raining pretty good here at the moment. Won't be doing too much outdoors today. Just what needs to be done for the treatment facilities. We have a meter in the pump house to take down and clean out. ::) :-\

The CAF had a B-18 at one time at the HQ in Midland. It was not airworthy and in bad need of restoration. I have bot been to Midland in at least 10 years. The CAF has a big announcement about the location of the new CAF HQ.

pony express,

The 29th Fighter Squadron was flying P-40's when they got to the CZ. How long they had them I have no idea.
I have a photo of a P-40 buzzing the tent city the Squadron lived in until barracks were built.
The CZ was at high risk of an attack, so the Military build up was pretty quick and maintained though out the War.

It was the main Naval route for ships to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and a big target for sabotage.
