Your ivory handled pistols and knives may soon be illegal
« on: March 15, 2014, 04:20:00 PM »
A complete ban on all ivory products in the United States is being railroaded through by the US Fish & Wildlife Service that would render all items containing ivory illegal to purchase or sell in the U.S. This would include pistol grips, knives, cue balls, piano keys, jewelry, furniture with ivory inlays, artwork, anything and everything containing ivory. This proposed ban is being rushed through with little public knowledge or input.

Nothing like making a substance so rare that the price rockets, then the poaching will really take off.

So true. Legal ivory sells in the US for about $250 per pound. It brings as much as $1500 lb in China. There is little incentive to smuggle it here when they can get many times the price elsewhere.

I am totally in agreement with not killing elephants and our current ban on importing elephant ivory. This new proposal makes all ivory illegal regardless if it was imported pre-1989 when it was legal.

I think if ANYONE is willing to take on the commitment of opening their hearts, and pocketbook, to provide the stability and security of a homelife by adopting children, then more power to them.

Funny how a thread on Ivory got sidetracked by a personal hate filled rant.

The Elephant is endangered - Ban Ivory to save the Elephant - Shoot Poachers - Pass laws to ban the sale and or ownership of ivory even on an old piano.

Yep makes total sense to a politician and after passing these wonderful, well thought out laws, book an Elephant hunting trip in South Africa.

I agree with a ban on anything with New Ivory.
However it means little if all Nations don't agree with it.

Placing a ban on Old Ivory (not meaning Prehistoric Ivory) will not bring back or save any animals that are known to carry Ivory. Those animals are already gone! An placing a ban on this type of Ivory is... well, ludicrous, silly, or just plain stupid on the part of the law makers!

Question, How will LEO personal tell the difference between some of the very well made "fake" Ivory? On Knives or Firearms?

Under the proposal, you must be able to document that your ivory is at least 100 years old. Of course since documentation was never needed, it doesn't exist. All other ivory, even if purchased or imported legally prior to 1989, becomes illegal.

I'm assuming that ivory already owned and not intended for sale, will be grandfathered prior to the bill?

It wouldn't be illegal to own it but you couldn't sell it so it becomes worthless.

And if it, the material is white like, sort of or kind of like ivory? but not ivory.
What happens then?

From my experience as a knifemaker, they will probably confiscate anything that looks like ivory.  I know of cases where legal materials like mammoth ivory were taken even though it shows how to differentiate between elephant ivory and mammoth ivory on the US Fish and Games own website.
