Recently stumbled upon a file of transcribed Civil War letters written by my great-grandfather and his brothers. In the file was this photo of the three of them in about 1861, the year they all enlisted. My GGF, William P.R. Wood, standing, and his older brother George, seated left, signed up with the Third Wisconsin Cavalry. Charlie, seated right, was first to enlist and joined the First Wisconsin Infantry.
"Billy" served out his enlistment chasing Bushwhackers in Kansas and Missouri mostly, and died in 1914. George took ill with typhoid fever in 1862, and after a long convalescence (and no voice for more than a year) was transferred to an Invalid unit that did guard duty in St. Louis. He died of fever in February 1865. Charlie started out as a musician and ended up a quartermaster sergeant with the First. His enlistment expired just after Sherman took Atlanta, and he lived a long life.
I feel very fortunate to have this information, and the letters, as well as other letters and my GGF's diaries.
