Third generation Colt SAA first range outing
« on: December 30, 2013, 06:16:00 PM »
Good evening, everyone.

My new to me Colt Third Generation SAA (NIB from Cabelas circa 2004) visited the range today, and I was pleasantly surprised with the results.  I've always wanted a real SAA, and the stars finally aligned.  It is a .45 with a 7 1/2 inch barrel, the stock black grips, and has beautiful bone and charcoal (the original and only way) case hardening.

Of course, like everyone else, I was initially concerned about the ubiquitous issue of large chamber throats and smaller bore.  Would accuracy be possible?  Thanks, St George, for helping allay my concerns.

I guess Colt knows what they are doing!  Of course, with a retired Marine general at its helm, any wonder...

Load was Starline brass, a Federal Match Magnum Large Pistol primer, 32 grains Schuetzen FFG, compressed about 1/8 inch, no wad, and an Old West mould copy of the veritable 454190 cast 1:20, and dropped at about .455.

The attached photo (apologies for poor quality - taken with IPad) shows the first ten rounds fired at 10 yards.  First shot was the flyer at 8:00 o'clock.  It shot point of aim - point of impact at 10 yards, and only a mite higher at 25.  Windage was dead on.

My hat is off to American quality!  It is not dead.

I welcome any comments and/ or advice.

There's a reason the gun is still being built 140 years after it was first introduced!   ;)

I have two First Gen Colt SAA's (built 1880 and 1881) still shooting clean SASS matches.  You (and your great grandchildren) should have lifetimes of enjoyment to look forward to with this revolver.  Now you just need to find it a mate so it won't be lonely.  ;D

I have 2 3rd generation Colts. .45 with 5 1/2" barrels. They are as accurate as any gun I've ever used.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.
