Can anyone tell why the 1895 Lever action rifle, had a a split finger lever?

The bottom half of the lever is actually part of the system that latches the lever in the closed position.So it hinges just a bit to disenguage the latch and lets you cycle the bolt.
Eat more beef the west wasn't won on a salad.
