My Version Of Slye Holster
« on: November 04, 2013, 12:25:54 PM »
First off let me tell you all how much respect I have for all of the artisans on this forums work.  Having done a few holsters and using them in Cowboy action shooting and in Re enactments I really appreciate what goes into making a good holster. I have made some of Will Ghormley's holsters and made some of them with and without patterns. Now I have made one like the one Slye makes.

So I thought I would show you the results.  This set of holsters is a Christmas Present for my Son.  It is all hand sewn and is 7/8oz leather double thick except at mouth it is triple thick.

Thank you all for your contributions to this forum and for all of the different ideas you all give.

Red Cent I would like to thank you also for your suggestions as to the shape and stiffness of the holster as it has helped me in my thinking of what I need for how I use my holsters.

Johnny Dingus

Slye thank you for your inspiration and all your hard work.  I hope I did not offend you by copying your work.

Very nice! Your son will be very happy with this Rig and proud to say his Father made it for him.

Many thanks for sharing it with us.

Dang Johnny. That is one nice rig you got there. That would be a competitive rig most anybody would wear. The crafting is very well done.

Good lookin' six guns too.

Glad I could help.

Slye, here is a site that contains a number of pictures of western holsters. The trigger guard screw is not used over here. There may be a couple but I am not aware of them.

hello Red cent,

We are agree with you,but we like on this holster the tension screw of the tragger guard
but it not necessary on a Cowboy Action Shooting rig
on my next personal rig, the tension screw aren't visible and however present for a western look

Could we have some pictures of the missing screw?  I have thought about tension adjustments on western holsters because it is an obvious modern adjustment to holsters that would improve western holsters if the whole game were more "practical".  They had machine screws back then too, though there are other things, like lace that could have adjusted tension.

Thank you all for your kind comments.  After making these and wet molding the holsters for the pistols that my son have I was very happy with them.  I told my wife that I would really like to keep them,  I put my pistols in them and the way they fit and would come out .... I was in love.  So now I have started a set for me.

Slye Thank you for your gracious response.  I did not put retention screws as I shoot a category called Gunfighter.  I need them to come out with out resistance.  In my area we have some really fast shooters and I need all the help I can get.  The pistols in the Pictures are Alchemista II in 357/38 caliber.  I am going to try and get comfortable with these to also help get me more competitive.  The hammer is lowered to help with cocking with both hands.

Ten Wolves thank you for your welcome back,  I really never left it is just that I work full time and do not make or have enough time to be on here as much as I would like.  I would also like to be doing more leather work than I am.  Will be able to retire from work in another 2 years.  Some times the wife thinks she is a computer widow because of the time I do spend on the computer.

I wanted to update you all on these holsters.  I haven't been around much but though it would help me to let you know so I can get back to working with leather and living again.  I got a call on 11 November 2013 from my son's wife.  He had died from having his tonsils out.  It was ruled as Post Obstructive Pulmonary Edema.  So he never got a chance to see the holsters.  About a year later we had a Cowboy friend and his wife over for dinner and he saw the holsters and wanted to know if they were for sale.  Well I am now making a set for him.  It is taking a lot of time for me to get back to working with leather and other things but this site and others are very helpful seeing all your work and how helpful you all are.

Thank you all for your kindness and talents.
