Those enamoured of the '76 would do well to find and read "Cowboy Cavalry" by Gordon Tolton. It's about the irregular cavalry units raised for the 1885 Rebellion in western Canada.
Recruits were equipped with a saddle (if they needed it) and a Winchester '76 carbine, I presume the civilian version of the carbine issued to the NWMP.

Many were American Cowboys already in Canada and others were on the lam from justice, all taking the oath of allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. When the fracas was over with hardly a shot fired in anger, they were given a land grant and the 1885 Rebellion medal.

Our good friend "Rattle Snake Jack's" persona is one of those historic characters and he is quite knowledgeable of the era and the guns thereof.

John Browning is synonymous with elegant.  JMHO.  Same could be said about Colt, Remington, Smith & Wesson.....Or any other gun manufacturer.  Browning just shows it off.

Beautiful carbine! Please tell me about the loads you put through it and the accuracy it delivers.

I've got the rifle version and it is my favourite 45-70. It's my 100-150-200m plinker. It has also taken two large moose for me with smokeless BP equivalent loads. It has yet to taste BP, but it will ......

Thanks Hardtack, I have the rife also that I bought new in 1986.
I`ve shot the 405 grain RN over 45 grains of 3031 for years but was a little disappointed so now am shooting the 405 FN over 33.5 grains of 4198 and am happy with the accuracy.
I also use 4198 in my 35 Rem and 3030 with excellent results.
I haven`t bench tested the load with the carbine het.

Nice carbine Pitchy. I have one just like it. I also have a modern Winchester 1886 "short rifle" with a 24 inch round barrel. Both shoot pretty good with BP and really good with smokeless.

I enjoy 36/3031 or 36/Varget with both 420 and 375 gr bullets in my '86. 28/5744 is also good.

Your load of 45/3031 sounds a bit much for much shooting out of a carbine.

I shoot 58.0 grains of 3031 in my 45-90, 45-70 and 40-82.  Yes I will admit that the recoil is a tad bit sharp but I have used this load of this powder since the early 1960's and the only ill effects have been to the game that have been shot and my shoulder.  Need to get a good grip y'know.  As far as having an '86 site that would be a nice thing to do but this site is not the place for it as this is devoted to the '76 in all its originals and reincarnations as it should be.  Yes, it would be nice if someone would make a site for the '86 as that is a grand old rifle and I am sure that there would be a bunch of "War" stories that could be told about it both old originals and those "New" ones.  There is a site for the '73' so I see no reason for one to not exist.  There--I have said my piece!

Nice Pitchy!  That Browning sure sounds sweet. John Moses sure knew what he was doing!

I liked the shooter's jacket!

I'm curious as to the load he was shooting. Didn't look like it rocked him too bad.

405 lead over 33.5 grains of 4198.
Wasn`t shooting at nothing in particular, just having fun.
That Stampede 45 LC shot good from a two hand hold.

Pitchy - How does it shoot with holy black in comparison to this load?

I've been shooting 36 grs of 3031 or Varget with both 350 and 420 gr bullets in my Browning '86 rifle for years. Either load would do for hunting. For plinking I like 28/5744 with the same bullets.
None of these loads are uncomfortable to shoot in the big '86 rifle.

Remember fellars the above target is from the pistol.
I`ve never tried black powder in this rifle, I`m pretty happy with the 4198 and am using it in my 35 Rem, 30-30 and 45-70`s and 45-60 .
I like the idea of using one powder but of course ya could do the same with black powder.

How come we don't got a forum on the '86's?

Ain't they Cowboy enough .... ?

Yes they are.   :)

However it is off topic for this forum which is specific to the Model of 1876.  I am locking this thread for that reason.

Anyone who desires to do so may contact Marshall Halloway, and request a board for the 1886/92, or 94 for that matter.  Someone will also needs to be responsible for monitoring the forum.

I let this thread run for a month to see what interest there is.  It has 10 participants.

Thanks,

Grizzly Adams
