Vary hard to get the last round in the magazine
« on: October 03, 2013, 05:59:41 AM »
Hi pards,

I took my new '73 to the range today for sighting in. One thing that was very difficult was getting the last round in. Eventually I got it in after a more then a few harsh words. Does it loosen up over time? I haven't read that people trim the magazine spring but I imagine this would lead to problems in the future.

Do you guys have this problem with new rifles?

I have trimmed a number of magazine springs leaving the spring about 5 inches longer than the magazine.  Never had a problem later.

It's a 38/357 Special Sporting Short Rifle (pistol grip)

Isom, I'm interested in your story.  In my 20" 32-20 I cut the spring even with the end of the mag tube and loading is still a bit of a pain because of the way the rounds zigzag into the carrier and mag tube.

It's a 10 round magazine (20" barrel) and I can only get 8 in comfortably, 9 in with a bit of swearing and 10 rounds with a lot swearing.

The 32-20 uses the same mag tube as the 38/.357. Many experience feeding issues with the piece. The Original used a smaller tube than Uberti uses. There never was a real 38/.357 in the Original 73 World.

A shooting Pard of mine has one and he still has a problem with the piece.

Remove the magazine end-cap and cut off the magazine springs until you have about 4" that extends beyond the end of the magazine tube.  The hardest part is getting the end-cap off!  MAKE SURE you have a properly fitted, wide bite when doing this, or you really will be swearing!

Here is a tool made for just that job-  cheap at half the price!

It's a sin that they tighten that end plug so much. The tool won't budge mine. I'm going to order a new plug then try an impact driver. PITB, it's the only flaw I've had with mine.

After loading ten, the last round loaded sits crooked on the carrier and won't allow the carrier to rise when I try to open the lever.  This rifle does have the bevel in the carrier mortice in the frame which Uberti failed to bevel on some frames a couple years ago, but the small rim of the 32-20 combined with the angle it sits on the carrier still causes it to jam as the rim is partially under the frame coutout.  After loading ten, I have to insert a knife blade into the carrier from the top and push the front of the round to the right which straightens it up and allows the first round to cycle.  The rest of the rounds feed fine as well.  Kind of a hassle to have to straighten that first one at the loading table but I've gotten used to it.
