'97 vs M12
« on: September 17, 2013, 08:14:35 PM »
The '97 retains it's rounds in the mag tube, unlike the  M12 which lets the previous rd go partially out of the tube.

Is there a way to overcome this?

I guess you could if you completely redesigned the feed system of the model 12.  Then it would not be a model 12.

I guess what I am saying is that due to the loading issue, the M12 does not make as good a combat shotgun as does the '97.

I agree.  If one already has a working '97, forget the model 12.

It's just that I have three M12's getting little to no use.

I'll refine my statement - considering the difference in loading techniques, it's surprising that the M12 was considered a combat shotgun at all.
It's possible to "tactically" load a Rem 870 with ease, compared to the M12.

The M12 has a track record of being used as a combat shotgun, despite the loading issue.

Every time I see someone single loading a '97 I shake my head. This only makes sense once the mag has been shot dry.

Playing a game, it couldn't matter less. M12's rock.

Well said! I would also like to ad that I only have to take one model 12 with me to WB matches instead of a minimum of three to get thru a big match with the 97.   Dusty Boddams

I can't fault the '97 for reliability. My wife and I each have one and we pounded hers mercilessly at a recent three gun event. This required the use of 10 slugs per shooter in one stage. Fortunately, we found a supply of Winchester 1200 fps 1 oz. loads so recoil was minimal.

I'm considering cutting the barrel of one of my M12s to 22" just for WB. Hate to as two are in 28" MC, the other 30" FC. Our club is considering adding skeet to the mix next year, so it could double as a skeet gun.
