refinish the Uberti stock?

I am thinking about refinishing the stock on my Uberti 73 to put more of a flat oil finish on it instead of that glossy finish that comes with them.  What is the best stain to use to get a nice color to the wood prior to oiling the stock.  I have already seen some recommendations for using Citristrip to remove the old finish and I would assume boiled linseed oil will be a good preservative to put back on the stock.  Just want to know what stain gives the wood a nice look?  I wold also like to checker the stock like the old Beretta Renegades but don't know if I want to tackle that project myself.

Did this 66 cresent but with Birchwood walnut and thier oil finish.

Just finished my 1873.

Removed the factory finish and applied three coats of Danish Oil leaving twelve hours
between applications.

Like it a lot better then the original finish.

I redid the stock on my Ubertie Henry. I removed the factory finish with acetone. I did not stain the stock , just applied several coats of Tru-Oil.

I have got my 73 44sp to do this spring (New Zealand) will stain it first once striped.
I have hated the finish on it since I got but wanted to do another one first.
Danish oil is very good.

Does anyone know what kind of wood Uberti uses on these rifles??  Ned that stock looks fantastic.  It looks like walnut that is why I wonder what Uberti uses.  I was at Wally world today and Minwax actually makes a stain called "gunstock"  that looks like what I am looking for.

Bobin:

It is A Grade Walnut which, in my personal opinion only, seems to be one step above what American gunmakers would call Field Grade.  Some of the wood on some standard Ubertis and Cimarron's really is decently figured and far better than standard walnut.

I personally would not stain any wood that has a beautiful grain, all it needs is oil.

The Ubertis use "European Walnut".  How that differs from American walnut I couldn't say.  Here is the first one I refinished.  Stained with Minwax "Special Walnut" (I think that was the color, I'm not at home now to verify).  Then quite a few coats of Formby's tung oil.
