.45 S&W Brass Won't Fit RCBS #20 Shellholder
« on: August 05, 2013, 02:58:32 PM »
According to RCBS the proper shellholder for the .45 S&W is the number 20. I just received the RCBS number 20 shellholder I ordered from Midway USA and the shellholder will not accept my brass.  The brass was made by Starline, Inc. if that has anything to do with the problem. Any thoughts?

I use an RCBS #35 shell holder for .45 S&W Schofield rounds and an RCBS #20 for .45 Colt rounds. My Schofield brass is only from Starline. The above is what the chart from Midway specifies  http://media.midwayusa.com/pdf/reference/shellholder_chart.pdf
The product description specifies that a  #20 RCBS shell holder works for .45 Schofield rounds which is confusing IMHO.

The Schofield has a larger diameter than the .45 Colt so it may be used in the break top revolvers.  The ejector will toss the Schofield brass out of the cylinder and may just ride over the .45 Colt leaving the cartridge still in the chamber.

Lee Shell holder for the Schofield is #5 and the .45 Colt is #11.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

I use a LEE #14, which is the same as I use for .44-40. I can also use the RCBS #4 which is the common shellholder for all belted magnums. They also work for .303 Brit.
