Cimarron vs. Taylor - comments ?
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:50:46 PM »
I'm looking to get a pair of '73 Colts, 4-3/4"bbl in .45 cal for mounted shooting.

I'm flirting with the Cimarron "P" model, which is supposed to be a faithful reproduction of 1873-1896 Colts, and Taylor's "Cattleman", although their current price list doesn't seem to include a plain blued gun in that cal. and finish.

I'm told both these outfits import guns made to their specs by Uberti, and both claim to have higher quality than what Uberti exports generally. Any comments, experiences, thoughts on the subject would be gratefully accepted !

It's hit and miss.  I've received good ones and poor ones from both importers.  I honestly don't think it makes a difference.

I have never heard Taylors claim their guns from Uberti are special, but I have heard Cimarron say this.  For my money I would rather deal with Taylors.  Better customer service IMO.  However, if you find a gun in stock at either place you better grab it because cowboy guns can be hard to come by.  Customer service doesn't mean much if a place doesn't have the gun you are looking for.

I own 4 Cimarrons:  2 Model Ps, one 1860 conversion, and a 12 gauge.  All function flawlessly and were a very good value.  I have no experience with Taylors, I have had to call Cimarron repair help and they were outstanding.  I am betting if you bought either one you'd be happy.  If you are worried, shop the auctions sites, get a good value, and save the extra to have someone tune them for you.  Or, if you purchase a "pre-tuned" model, I am betting you will find them to be superb.

Best of luck, and have fun!

+1 for Taylors. Customer service is ZIP for Cimarron, and has been for some time. The folks at Taylors will take care of you right!

That's about like saying the Chevy dealer on the west side of town has different Chevy's than the Chevy dealer on the west side of town. They all come from the same place, there is no difference in build quality.  What might be different is that one or the other might have some variation the other doesn't.  But, as far as the guns themselves.  They all come from the same factory.  I've even gotten a couple that were in the wrong boxes.

I bought a pair of EMF Pony Express revolvers.
I really liked them.
My wife and I attempted mounted shooting; but our horses hated it.
I sold off the revolvers; but regret doing it. They were really slick and well made.

Thanks, fellers. I found a local dealer who will get me a pair of Cimarron model "P"s reasonably, and back them up if they're not "right". I think I know the drill with Ubertis, I have a couple of percussion Navies, and they took some fiddling with to get smooth.

Ab-Bill, I've got just short of a year on my green pony, getting her to be an all-around using horse. She just turned four, Sunday was her second time in the arena with shooters. Ear plugs made all the difference in the world for her, but I've yet to pop off some caps from her back. My wife's 10 year old mare was totally new to this as well, but she didn't even flinch. ?? It's definitely more about the horsemanship than about the shooting . . . I can't remember when I've had more fun, though !

Our horses hated the ear plugs and began to develop a flinch at the sound of even a cap gun going off anywhere in the vicinity, even with ear plugs in.
The clinic we went to didn't do well as it was a cold, rainy, windy day in a metal sided and roofed indoor arena. The wind was banging loose metal panels and the guns echoed inside. It left a bad feeling for our horses.
It's ok. I shoot only on the ground now, and my wife and I do team penning and ranch sorting on horse back. Still get to play and move cows.

Ab-Bill, very first practice this outfit held was back in March in a covered arena, and I noticed the gunfire was a whole lot louder in there than outdoors. I honestly don't know if our critters will settle down to this kind of riding, I don't aim to rush things. Like getting a horse OK with a lot of different situations, how you go about it can make all the difference, but there are those that will never warm up to the problem at hand. If that ends up being the case with ours, I'll be "grounded" with you.

Still, anything you can do on horseback is just that much better ! (Fly without leaving the ground!) Happy trails !

Update - FWIW . . .

For availability, I opted for a pair of Cimarron Model P revolvers with 5-1/2" barrel in .45 LC purchased from a trusted local dealer. The finish and fit is really good, and the actions are perfectly timed, butter smooth with a really light trigger pull, out of the box.

I'm mighty happy !! (I'll know more soon as I can put a few rounds through 'em, though.) I bought them for mounted shooting . . .

I have had good luck with the quality of each, however I find dealing with Taylors much easier as they are at our local gun shows in Virginia and seem to want to make the customer happy by standing by their product more than Cimarron in my experience.

Cimarron has been great to me, returns, repairs, no issue.  This is all in last year.

Check out my Taylor's Smoke Wagon with 4 3/4 in 45LC. Well worth 610.00 in my opinion. This action job from Jim Finch aka Longhunter was the best money I've ever spent. In the long run, this will save you money on sending the gun to someone who will do the action job, plus shipping on top of that. Check out his website as he lists all that was done to it.
I just posted a whole lot of pictures in a separate topic. From what I know, it was made to accommodate mounted shooters. Smoke Wagon or Running Iron are great. I had Cimarron Frontier and it was a really great gun with really good finish and slick action. Check out my picture and range review of the Frontier. I do plan to get Model P from them as I like it very much. I really like the patent dates on the frame and this was one of the reasons I did not get the new Great Western 2 revolver. If I come across a early run with Turnbull finish, patent dates, and "single action army" on the barrel, it will be a winner for sure. I had two of these and were great. Too bad there is no cure for stupidity as I sold them some time ago.
Enjoy
Bear

To be fair I think Cimarron has gotten its customer service act together more as of late.
