I love my 76
« on: May 24, 2013, 04:45:13 PM »
I love my Chappy 1876 in 45-60, it is pleasant to shoot using a 405 grain cast bullet even with a crescent butt plate and is pretty accurate for open sights.  :)
Shot this four shot group at 50 yards off hand.

Nice!  I have heard the barrels on those are excellent.

Thanks Mean Bob, it`s one of my favorites but heavy to cary to far, on long hikes i generally carry my Marlin Cowboy 45-70.
I have a Browning 86 also but it hurts shooting it with the crescent butt plate and have never really warmed up to it.
Have a Sharps 45-70 too but also to heavy to carry far.
The 76 is all around pretty pleasant rifle to shoot  :)
I contribute the accuracy i`m getting now to the use of the 405 grain cast bullet.
Whoops i see i miss typed my first post and said it was a 45-70  :o i`ll correct that.

PS, all those other holes in that target are from my neighbor sighting in his BLR 30-06  :-\

Im with Ya Pitchy,The 76 is my favorite. Just somthin about them big ole levergun's. My 86 is a 45-70 and more accurate than I can do it justice, the 94 s are just plain handy and make more sense. The 73 I just picked up is nudging it's way in, them are a notch up on Cool. But the ole 1876 is my Favorite ......Dusty

I agree.  I've collected Winchesters for a long, long time, but in the last 15 years I've concentrated on the 1866, 1873 and 1876 models.  I still think my favorites are the 76's.  I shoot them often and reloading with original tools and molds turns out the very finest ammunition, IMHO.  Shoot on!

The First 1876 I bought was the Chappy in .45-60.  I shot the heck out of it using Black Powder, Pyrodex, and Pinacle.  I also used bullets ranging from 295 grain GC to a .405 grain HB and they all would cluster in an 11 inch frypan I had hanging at the 100 yard line at my local club.  I also tried some 300 grain soft lead slugs I paper patched and they also were very accurate.

The only complaint I had was the crescent butt plate.  So, earlier this year I sold my Chappy to an older shooter at my local range and bought a .45-60 Carbine from Cimarron.  IIRC they called it the "Crossfire Trail" carbine to distinguish it from the NWMP model.  This carbine shoots as well, if not better, so I am a happy camper
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
