WTT: Smith & Wesson M & P .38 Special for 1841 Mississippi
« on: April 27, 2013, 01:10:22 PM »
Gentlemen,
I'm trying to get set up for this genre and I'm looking for an 1841 Mississippi rifle to go with my '51 Navy.  I've got a six inch nickel Smith & Wesson M & P in .38 Special with it's original four inch barrel thrown in that I'd trade for the Mississippi.  Put that safe queen to use!

Since no one has a spare Mississippi laying around, I'm probably going to be forced to build the Lyman Plains Rifle kit I bought years ago.  Oh well, that will be a good project, as well!

Mr. Niederlander Sir,
I read  your signal with great interest.  Have you looked at the Taylor M 1841's?  I understand that they can be had in .54 cal.  I have three (3) original m'41's that I purchased back in '69 all for under @225.00 ea.  Ah, those were the days.  I have a near mint Harpers Ferry, dated '51, and two (2) Robert Kenndal & Lawrence, '47.  My shooter has a Bill Large bbl, that he  made for me around '71.  I still shoot it on a regular basis.  Now, should you aquire one, let me know as I have an original issue flask and pouch w/ the buff sling.  I made a pattern many years ago, and have offered them on occation.  I also have an original arsenal .526 RB mould.  Even have the correct P1837 rifle sling.  Sure makes a neat package.  So, if you get one, let me know, and I will fix you up with the necessary appendeges.

The Mississippi Rifle was the AR-15 of the Antebellum period. A lot of first-hand accounts verify their widespread use throughout the US, especially in the west.
They have been a hard-to-find item lately. I am not aware of any 2nd hand ones available. I've checked The Blockade Runner, C&D Jarnagin, S&S Firearms, Frazer Brothers, Track of the Wolf & Fall Creek Sutlery.

My personal advice would be shop track of the Wolf for a good deal or contact Zimmerman http://www.edsmart.com/jz/guns.htm#usrifles

That's a good way to describe them!  Yet another gun I should have bought when I first wanted one.  I've liked them ever since I saw a picture of one in the Time Life Old West book on the Mexican War when I was a kid.  I'll come up with one eventually, and in the meantime, building the Hawken will be fun, too.

Niederlander,

You may want to go to the N-SSA web site at www.n-ssa.org
Click on Bulletin Board and then go to Civil War Small Arms section. You maybe able to find M-1841 "Mississippi" Rifles for sale on occasion.
Dixie Gun Works, Cabalas and perhaps Taylor's & Co. may have new '41's available in the caliber you want.
Hope this helps,

Nice leads Blair, thanks.  BTW, this isn't the same Blair that worked at Knotts Berry Farm back in the late 80s, early 90s is it?

By the way, what should a used 1841 replica go for in nice shape?

Dave,

No, I don't think so. I was working a Jamestown Settlement Park at the time.

Niederlander,

If you find a custom shooting grade '41 on the N-SSA site they will run from $1,000.00 to $1,600.00 depending on the alteration variant.
The more basic repro can run from $300.00 to $400.00 used.
