Hello SSS,

I never did get that Stevens Tip Up Rifle.  The bidding went too high for me to continue. However, I made contact with a gentleman from New Hampshire and one thing led to another and I went up to his home and saw his rifle collection and once I saw and handled one of his Stevens rifles I was hooked.

I purchased his mint Stevens Walnut Hill in .22 caliber.  These are photos of that very fine rifle.  This is my first venture into single shot rifles.

Now, if I could only find some CCI .22 Standard Ammo ::) ::)

Maybe, a nice addition to the Cas City family would be a Single Shot Rifle Forum dedicated to small game and target shooting ;D

   Greetings!

Very beautiful! Also look for Aguila Super Extra Std. Velocity; I'm favorably impressed, and the prices tend to be very competitive!

        Be Well!

Two flints,
Congratulations an the Walnut Hill. Beautiful!!
My youngest son and I each have Stevens 414 Armory Models, his with Frank Zika  soule tang sight and globe front-- mine is topped with a  vintage Lyman 438 Field model scope and external adjustable mounts. We shoot quite a bit of .22 BPCR silhouette matches- ( watching rams tip over at 200 meters is always entertaining, and those darn tiny chickens at 50 are challenging) also mini buffalo gong matches out to 250 yards is just plain fun, and shooting 22s  is a lot easier on the pocketbook as well.
A small-bore Single Shot rifle forum is a great idea.
For ammo, our 414s LOVE the Wolf Match ammo,(if I miss-- it's not the ammo or the rifles fault!!) it too is affordable(around $49.00 a brick here in Minnesota)  for us it has been the most consistent, accurate ammo for the money. The Aguila Super is decent as well, and for plinking I had picked up a bunch of the Federal bulk packed ."22 Auto Match", it's at least "minute of squirrel".
I'm thinking that you are really going to enjoy your Walnut Hill.

Hi Big Goose,

I have this terrific Walnut Hill but no ammo for it.  None of the gun shops in my area have 22 ammo.  Any chance you have a user manual or instruction manual for your Armory Model?  I was told by the seller to use CCI or Eley ammo for best result. Thanks for the information on Wolf Match Ammo!

My Walnut Hill came with the Lyman Junior Targetspot Scope, 10X Power.

Oh, Boy! Now you've touched upon one of my other passions, .22 caliber single shot rifles! I have a 14 pound Marlin Ballard, DST, Walnut Hill type forearm, Stevens tube scope (forget which # at the moment and it is in storage), barreled by A.O. Neidner with one of his heavy weight barrels when he was in Dowiagiac, MI.

I'm editing this because my enthusiasm for .22 single shot rifles caused my eyes and brain to glaze over....I completely forgot my initial intent was to congratulate Two Flints on acquiring a superb rifle! Well done, my friend!

Jobe, Two Flints

I do love those Ballards, have a #5 Pacific( Freund & Bro. marked) in 44-77... I do have a Dave Crossno liner for it, and an 1889 vintage 85 low wall in 22 LR, but my best matches I've shot with the old 414 Stevens. I stocked up on match ammo in the past couple years so the current panic hasn't much affected my supplies.... still when I find some quantity of 22 match ammo I pick it up. If you get a chance -- see the winter 2010 issue of "Black Powder Cartridge News"  my good friend Duke Munger from WI. hosts a great match for us every spring... its a good 8 hrs plus drive for me, but well worth the trip.  we still have hip deep snow on the ground--- really looking forward to spring

Two Flints, that is quite the score you made! Now you may have to join one of the schuetzen unions, and invest in a suit and a derby hat!
