.30 Mauser in a .30 Tokarev? (But NOT the other way around!)
« on: January 27, 2013, 07:44:31 AM »

I am sure that we have all seen the warnings not to use .30 Tokarev ammo in a gun chambered for the .30 Mauser, (like a Broomhandle) as it will likely destroy it.

But what about the other way around?

Can you safely chamber .30 Mauser in .30 Tokarev chambered firearm?

It's kind of a moot point question, as I have dies, and a limited amount of brass for each anyway, but I am curious to know what the options might be.

There are some pretty minor differences in the dimensions of each round, but I don't have any personal experience of interchangeability. You might have already seen this from Wikipedia:

During the Finnish-Soviet Winter War and World War II, the cartridge was issued by Finnish and German forces for use in captured Soviet submachine guns, due to its inherent substitutability for the Soviet 7.62×25mm round. According to Finnish military archives, the Finnish Army ordered one million rounds of 7.63mm Mauser from FN for this purpose.

Just in doing some google searches, it appears that the consensus is that .30 Mauser can generally be used in a .30 Tokarev chamber.

If you have guns for both rounds, make sure you don't mix 'em up! :(

I've got a tt-33.  Most of my brass is .30 Mauser, as thats what Grafs had.  Works fine.  I load to .30 Mauser levels anyways, plus some lead bullet rounds that just barely dribble the brass out of the action!  Great fun, one of my favorite handguns.  Even got a PPS-43c coming to go with it!
