Really pondering saa
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:47:55 PM »
Ive always been attracted to saa's.  i have a chance to get a model p and a cattleman both in 357.   What are the owner opinions?  I plan to shoot the crap out of them.

I suspect both are Ubertis and should hold up well.  There are also plenty of parts available if they break.  "Shoot the crap out of them" is pretty subjective.  The top level shooters will dry their guns hundreds of thousands of cycles and fire tens of thousands of practice rounds.  If you intend to do that, the most rugged SAA is the Ruger.

They look and feel amazing.   Really wanted one in 44 too but couldn't get a deal.   Can they handle full house 357 loads or only Bp?

A Colt clone will last you many years. It took me from 1997 until 2011 to wear one out to the point that buying a new one was better than rebuilding the old one.  I shoot loads that are about equivalent to factory. If you stick to factory, or factory type, ammo and don't abuse the gun it will last you at least as long. BTW, I averaged, at that time, about 70 rounds a month through the gun.

Doesn't seem like a lot of rounds to wear a gun out

Were the internals worn or was the barrel shot out as the 12K figure seems a bit low for a gun to be un-revivable into working condition.

It could have been rebuilt. The finish was getting a little rough, not bad but not nearly new. The grips were serviceable but had a few nicks and some finish knocked off. The bolt spring and hand spring could be replaced. It had some timing issues. BUT by the time it would be back in good serviceable condition, I could get trade in value and for about $200 get a brand new gun. This is probably not true now but was then. If it had been a Colt I'd still have it. It wasn't so I took the new gun.
