Ranald Mackenzie and 4th Cavalry- Texas 1871-1874
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:44:44 AM »
Any experts out there on MacKenzie and the 4th Cavalry in Texas during the 1870's?

Some others and I are looking for an old battle site and I'd like to brush up on equipment and uniforms. Especially if we start finding some artifacts.

Found this buckle, but not sure it is right period...

Roller buckles fall right into the time frame - but were ubiquitous - so unless you're locating associated militaria, it's impossible to say if this came from civilian or military leather.

You might enjoy the triology of the Red River Wars by Walter Lucas. Starts with the second battle of Adobe Walls and ends with MacKenzie's capture of Quanah on the Praire Dog Fork of the Red River at Palo Duro Canyon. Dialog is of course fiction but, the point in time and participants are real history.

I agree.  Read it this summer.   Still may have to buy it, did the library thing as wife was eyeing my book budget.
