Bullet for BP huntng
« on: October 28, 2012, 07:17:54 AM »
I'm torn between the lyman 427098 and the 427666 for hunting deer with black powder. I'm sure both would get the job done but the 427098 doesn't hold much lube, looks llike the 427666 does. I realize the lube issue won't matter for hunting as I hope not to have that many follow up shots  :-\. No matter what I shoot I would llike it to be as accurate as possible even though 100 yds or less will be the limit wher I hunt. I read a lot about both but nothing conclusive about either.

I do more plinking (very accurate plinking) than hunting. It just make me feel good to know the bullet will hit the target if I do my job.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

PS. i'm shooting a Uberti 1873 rifle in 44-40.

Jack,

I have both molds and can tell you that the 427098 holds more lube than the 429666 (1.0 gr vs .7 gr) and I found the 427098 to be more accurate (groups 1/2 the size) with b.p. than the 427666.

A year or so ago "Lonesome Henry" was looking for a bullet that would be more accurate with b.p. than the 427666 that he was using.  He purchased a mold for the 427098 and found that it was definitely superior as his posted  targets show.

The rest of the story......
The B.P. brand used with the 427098 is important for maintaining accuracy..... if one is going to shoot more than a dozen rounds in a 24" barrel. SWISS will run for many, many rounds but Goex nor Schuetzen will not in my experience. If one desires a bullet with the nose profile of the 427098 but with the added lube capacity to run trouble free with b.p.'s other than Swiss, the ACCURATE 43-215C would be the bullet of choice.  In my testing it has proven to be just about as accurate as the historic 427098.

Thanks w44wcf,

It's better to look at others experience with molds and save a lot of money and suffer less frustration.

I don't have any swiss but plenty Goax. It should be fine for hunting and for plinking I can use smokeless.

Thanks again

Jack
