Thanks guys, I ordered the load 6 kit this mourning.  Is this a pretty simple operation to install?

I just removed the tube from inside the spring in mine and then it would take 5, so I cut a little off of the spring (twice) and now it takes 6 easily. Still functions fine, it is an original manufactured in 1911. My other one is an IAC and takes six with no mods. Those are 2 3/4" shells.  :P WM

I am guessing that I will need to attack this project from the muzzle end of the tub?  Remove the two clamp forming prts and then the screw that traverses the actual tube??  Looks like this will open it up for the new spring and carrier.

not addressing the problem but the cause. why did the board got to 6 rds. in shotgun that was not really made for 6.  1911s hold 7rds but regulated to 5 for saftey and stage design.  so why cause so much trouble by wanting 6 shells in shotgun?  just idle thoughts from an idle fellow.

Exactly! Why in the wide world of sports did we ever start the game of WBAS requiring 6 in the mag. JMB designed it to hold 5 in the mag not 6 and 5 is what we should be loading NOT 6. It's just crazy. Stagewriters can fix this by writing 5 into the stage instructions. I have cratered 2 Winchester clones trying to overload the mag. A trench gun that was spanky new and supposedly tuned and slicked by famous cowboy gunsmiths and a 93/97 that had been trouble free. The trench gun never fired again and was declared a parts gun only by a premier 97 cowboy smith. The 93/97 is still in the shop.

I have been using the 5 featherlite and one B&P 2.5 inch solution and it works well. Those short black B&P shells take down kd steel as well as the featherlites.

I am definitely not an expert and was handed my .... when I got to inquisitive about the mag issue but do think I know the answer for the Mod '97.  I have seen it claimed that before I was even a pup, the 12ga was a standard 2 1/2" shell and was thus actually designed for six.

Actually the 93 and the first 97s were designed to shoot the 2 5/8" black powder round.

Something to check on the 97 that is not feeding well from the magazine.  Check the end of the carrier that is near the base of the shell.  I had one that had a high spot that was touching the base of the shell.  This kept the shell from moving when released.  The shell only moves a little when released. Just enough to clear the rim.

I've got the Wild Bodie Tom kit installed in my 1906 & 1913 Winchester '97's and just picked up another kit at Winter Range for my Winchester '97 Trench Gun. They work flawlessly.

On my original 97 the steel follower was bottoming out so I shortened the magazine follower to where it bells out to stop it against the frame. This gives you enough to get the 6th round in'er. I dont remember if I cut any coils off the spring. Try and cut until it works.

I was able to get a sixth round in the magazine when I shortened AAs to 2 3/8 inch and roll crimped.  Really cheep as well. I am set up to roll crimp at almost any length, but any shorter than 2 3/8" and the shell got lost in the feed cycle.

I realized that I posted this info over 3 years ago! :)

Chewing gun and Rubber Bands???  Band-Aids???  For a measly few dollars you can install a simple kit (spring and follower) that will allow
6 up in the Mag without jumping through hoops!!

For a reloader my option is very simple. I use split necked AAs, thus I am getting a couple of extra loads for nothing. My local club only has a couple of wild Bunch matches a year so a box of reloads a match is quite simple;- For me.

Different strokes for different folks.
