A little tongue in cheek fun here, but I am banned from Keith County Nebraska (ogalla is county seat)  by the Sheriff.  He caught me at the State Fair in 1999 with what he called a running iron, I say it is a lid lifter for dutch ovens, but the Sheriff of Sheidan County agreed with him and invited me out to his domain to check out a cottonwood tree they own.

Running Iron:  Ring or flat iron used to draw a brand rather than stamp it on.  In the old west, used by rustlers to quickly mark unbranded cattle.  In some places it is still illegal to carry a running iron; however, in others, it is a common practice to apply a legal brand with one.

I ain't sure.  Since he is also a real cowboy, I put him in a bad spot, because he don't want to offent the cook.  Besides that anyone knows the other guys beef tastes better, just have the cook bury the hide away from camp.

Since it appears you might be headed it that direction, might want to consider changin' your moniker to one of these genuine terms for a "rustler":

"Brand-burner"
"Brand -blotter"
"Brand-blotcher"
"Brand-artist"
"Long rope"
"Rope and ring man"

Originally, "Waddy" was a name for a rustler, but evolved to mean any cowpuncher.

You can find a definition for the first six in Ramon F. Adams' "Cowboy Lingo".

Spanish governor issues ordinance on cattle branding

On this day in 1783, Domingo Cabello y Robles, Spanish governor of Texas, issued a bando, or ordinance, imposing strict guidelines for the roundup, branding, and export of unbranded cattle. At the time, the province was in the midst of a protracted livestock controversy. Cattle rustling between vecinos and missions, depletion of cattle through wasteful slaughter and excessive exports, and noncompliance with an ordinance of January 1778 were holdovers from the administration of Cabello's predecessor, Juan María de Ripperdá. Enforcing existing regulations and preventing illegal exports became Cabello's major concerns. Cabello's enforcement of livestock regulations resulted in much animosity from ranchers. Soon after his departure from the province in 1787, the ranchers filed a memorial against Cabello charging him with arbitrary and unjust decrees and misrepresentations that denied them rights to unbranded cattle. The case did not adversely affect his career, for by 1797 Cabello had reached the rank of field marshall.
