The KVC is known for being inovative in our matches.  Most of our shoots are one or two day affairs along a theme.  The 1st Sunday in July has traditionally been the .22 shoot and Ice Cream Social.

This year we had an interesting twist. A [not so] anonymous donor, offered a really nice black range coat (a heavy duster) for the shooter who finishes in 3rd place.

For most of our 1 day shoots we do not pass out awards.  First place gets bragging rights and everyone (except the last place finisher) shot better than somebody. [I used to brag that I was the worst shot in the KVC: but I have improved... a little.]

So with a nice Range Coat for 3rd Place, how do you shoot?  There is no way to shoot for 3rd place; especially with an independent score keeper.  So you shoot the best that you can, and hope two people out shoot you.

This made for a really fun time and some hillarious conversation during the match.  Everybody was shooting for 3rd Place.

First place still gets bragging rights.  Third place got the coat.  Second place.....well?

Books, At one large shoot I attended a vendor donated a set of holsters, belt and shotgun belt to the shooter that came in closest to his age.  He said he was so old that one of the new shooters had to win the rig.  He felt that would encourage new shooters that place low in the pack. At another a vendor donated a set of holsters to the shooter that finish the shoot and shot all the stages and came in last. I thought the gift to the last place was pretty special even though I did not win. He said he did that because most shoots recoginized the really good shooters and ignored the new shooters. Both of these along with third place are all good and "something different".Celeste

I used to shoot muzzle loaders a lot, they gave a pound of black powder to the last place shooter, to encourage him to practice.  I rarely had to buy powder.

Depends on how much the entry fee is ..might be better off coming last just to get the donated holsters, belt and shotgun belt..I could give anyone a good run for last place.. CA$H
