I know that 50-95 cases can be made from 348win. brass. Has anyone tried using 50 alaskan or 50-110win. cases? ----

I know nothing about making them but why not just buy them rather than trying to make them. Buffalo Arms had them in stock a month ago as I bought 50. .50-95 uses the same shell holder as .50-70 govt. incedentially.

Sorry for the spelling in the previous post. Don't the .348 and .45-70 share the same case head dimensions? If so .348 cases would be too small.

Gentlemen:
As I stated in another post about case head specs. The 40-60, 45-60, 45-75 and 50-95 cases all are same head specs. They ARE NOT the same as the 45-70 case. As far as making these out of 348 cases or 50-90 cases it is not that hard but if you want to see if these are available, go to "custombrassand bullets.com" and check it out. They still list 45-75 cases so you might strike pay-dirt with your search.

The .45-60 and .40-60 have about the same rim diameter and head dia. in front of the rim as the .45-70. HOWEVER, the rims
may
be a tad thinnner than modern .45-70 brass. Depends on how tight your rifle headspacing is (oriignals...not sure about replicas). The head dia. of the .50-95 WCF is approximately the same as the .50-70 Gov't, but according to "The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions, the
rim
dia. of the .50-70 Gov't is .660 vs. 627 for the Winchester round. The rim thickness of the Gov't round is .063-.070", whereas the .50-95 rim thickness is listed at .060". If you can get pre-formed brass, it is probably a lot easier than what is required to make the brass from something else.

If I had to choose how to get .50-95 cases I'd start with proper cases, reform .45-75 (blow it out), cut down .50 AK, cut-down .50-90 (and turn the rims), expand .348 brass in that order. I use .45-75 brass with proper headstamp BUT have so many before those became available that I reformed from .348 and .50 AK that i'll use them until they are worn out...
The .40-65 and .45-60 are formed from .45-70 brass which does NOT have the same case head dimensions as the .348 which was originally developed from the .50-110 WCF.

I make my 40-60 brass out of 45-70 brass. Easy to do. You cannot use .348 for it though. Way to big. I make all of my 50-95 brass out of .348 brass though. works quite well, fireforms great and is a real money saver.

I have found that blowing out .348 cases causes some of the primer pockets to stretch a bit. Then of some the primers will be loose. 348 case do work fine, just look ugly because the case head does not fill out. So just select the best ones from your effort.

Starline sent me a couple of 50-90 Sharps cases to measure. The body dia. and rim thickness is the same as an original 45-75 WCF
cartridge that I have. They will only require turning the rim dia. and trim to length for about half the cost of Bertram 50-95 cases. ------- GeezerD
