Pietta Cap 'n Ball 1873
« on: May 16, 2012, 01:35:26 AM »
Pietta makes a cap 'n ball version of their 1873 SAA. I'm assuming the parts are interchangeable. Is this the case?

And if so, are the legal issues any different than say adding a conversion cylinder to any other cap n ball gun?

In other words, can I add a cartridge cylinder to a cap 'n ball Pietta 1873?

Don't hold me too this, but I seem to recall that dimensions are slightly different on the C&B gun...just so this isn't possible. :-\

The Pietta 73 is not SASS legal for C&B matches.  Also, Pietta went to great lengths to make sure you CANNOT just drop in a cartridge cylinder.  Among other things, the large percussion hammer nose goes through the frame so there is no recoil shield in the area where the primer on a center fire would be.

Whut they sed.   I once saw a pair of these pistols being used at a match and wondered whut on earth they wuz. ?   :o  Found out later that they are produced for sale in places where owning a cap & ball pistol is legal but where there are extreme restrictions on the owning of cartridge pistols.  Like the U.K.   With these pistols a reenactor can have a '73 Colt ( replica ) that is legal to own in those areas.
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Hi Cookie,

I shoot one of those pistolas along with a ROA as my CAS guns. Mine is made by Uberti.

They were designed for the UK market when our Goverment robbed us of our cartidge pistols.

I think you will find the hammers are different as is the frame so it would take a lot of work to convert to a cartridge pistol.

Regards from across the pond.

Thanks for the replies!

Someone local's selling one for under $200, so I was thinking I could buy it as a backup gun since I already own a pair of Pietta Great Westerns. But, looks like that's a no-go.  :-\

Every time I read about the Draconian gun laws in the land that gave us the Magna Carta, my eyes go to these quotes from Ayn Rand:

"A government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights. It holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims."
"The only power a government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."   Ayn Rand

We aren't much better off in Canada. Alan Rock was our Justice Minister when we were saddled with our 1995 gun laws wherein all guns and gun owners had to be registered. He stated that his "vision of Canada was a country where only the army and police had guns." He forgot about criminals who disregard all laws.

If that isn't the description of a police state, then I don't understand the term.

I've heard that the Olympic shooting events will be done with 'Nerf' guns having a velocity of 250 fps. Targets will be foam 'Happy Faces' enscribed with the Olympic 'Five Rings' and the warning - "Smile - Big Brother Is Watching" ..... ;>)

George Orwell must be turning in his grave as Britain becomes the embodiment of what he described in "1984".

Well, since I got my answer, I suppose we can take this thread off the rails a bit.  ;D

I love that Ayn Rand quote too PJ. I just came across this pic and I laughed out load. If anyone out there is confused what those poor "Occupy" lemmings really want, here's your answer:

Republics are born out of great strife, evolve into benevolent dictatorship/nanny states, then into totalitarian/socialist regimes and the strife starts all over again ..... the average shelf life being 200 years.

What happened in Britain, Australia and Canada is proof that 'gun control' has nothing to do with 'crime', it's all about power. It cannot be demonstrated that any 'gun control' law has ever prevented a crime, but it's allowed a lot to happen.

You'd think we'd learn, but we don't.

Unfortunately, no. But I see them pop up in the local online classifieds fairly often. But this one was the cheapest I had seen so far.

It really makes me wonder who buys non-replica cap 'n ball pistols who isn't shooting CAS?

Howdy, I came across one myself, picked it up because it was so pretty, and the feller who had it before me said the same thing, you cannot swap it out with 45 LC cylinders, would take a whole lot of work to do the fitting. It is cheaper to just buy a new cartridge gun instead of trying to convert them, besides I would be worried about barrel pressure and such.It is a beauty though, not legal for matches but with the faux pearl grips and 7.5 inch barrel, it looks the part of a 1873. Paid $300 for it, wish I had bought a real colt instead.
