All you folks out there that shoot the Officers Model.  Here's a questions for you....
What do you do to keep the cleaning rod from junping from it's position under the barrel when shooting?
After the 2nd or 3rd shot I find that the rod has moved out in front of the barrel anywhere from 3-4 inches.

OK>>>>now, don't anyone suggest removing the rod before shooting...... Smiley

Thanks,

I have never had that happen, so I'm at a loss.

Good Luck!

My experience also.

Could it be that the pin that hold the rod in place is missing from the bottom of the barrel ?

If the retaining of the cleaning rod is similar to a muzzle loading mlitary Rifle musket, then you may have to put a "V" shaped spring against the retainer that will give it some more tension against the ramrod/cleaning rod to keep it in place.  Hope this helps.

Doesn't work like that - the wiping rod is held in place via a stud on the barrel that fits an aperture in the rod ferrule.

Mine works it's way out too. I tied a piece of leather lace around the ferrule and that helps, but when shooting a match with it I take it out and leave it in my tent.

Sorry for the tardy reply.

Mine has the original vernier tang, but the previous owner mad several modifications to it to make it more like an original Officer's model Springfield. One of these modifications was the addition of a standard M-1873 rear sight. I have left the tang sight on it but I almost always use the barrel sight.
