Need a good mild load with soft lead bullets where the powder is not position sensitive for a colt SAA 44 special built on a 1st generation BP frame.

Is the barrel modern steel? The cylinder? Is the timing very good?  Check with the milder loads shown in the Lyman or Hodgdon's loading manuals.  Trail Boss is intended to bulk up, but I would go a little above the MINIMUM load shown, and go with 200 grain bullets. Crimp the brass mouth firmly into a crimp groove on the bullet.

16 grains of 3F goex, grits filler to the base of a 200 gr. RNFP. ;)

Use a load recommended for the shorter .44 cases.

I went to Hodgdon's site and cutnpasted this;

200 GR. CAST LRNFP  Hodgdon  Titegroup  .430"  1.450"  4.5  846  8,600 CUP  5.4  973  13,100 CUP 

Titegroup is supposed to be position INsensitive and they offer 4.5 to 5.4 grains as a load suggestion for 200 gr cast bullets.
