I'd gladly take some of them 'maters off yer hand, Lil' Roo ... my 'mater plantin' days are over.  And now IS the season to enjoy nice thick 'maters - salted & peppered and then covered with cottage cheese.

But I 'spect that Indy is just a little too far frum Vir-ginny to take some of them 'maters off your hands, pard.

 ;)

...  or even some corned beef & cabbage, either! ;D

mmmm that sounds good

'Roo,
You ever blanche any of them 'maters? I do when I can't eat 'em fast enough, put them in freeze lock bags an' drag some out when I make salsa or spaghetti sause. I do the same for the chilies.
You guys had me droolin' on the corned beef & got one goin' in the crock for sammiches yesterday ;D

Pulled the garlic on the 4th of July, letting it dry now.  Harvesting tomatoes, lettuce and herbs.  Soon to get okra and fennel.  The chard got away from me so it is big and tough.  Braise it tender and serve it with ???  Well, I am not sure what I'll serve it with.

Already planning the winter garden and the one for next spring.  Winter will be winter rye as a green manure.  Till it under in March or April.  Next year we will rotate the rows and plant some other stuff along with it.

This is the first year I put in any flowers in the rows.  The butterflies, bees and birds love them.  I'll make sure to include them in next years garden.

Lost all 4 4 out of 30 some cukes in the heat, lost part of the green beans and the peas.  Got turnips planted now in some of the empty, going to do more beans and some more collards in a day or so.  Going to have sweet corn and pumpkins by the weekend, going to start okra pickles and the crowder peas are doing good, 'maters, fair.

Roma tomatos are starting to show. Had a real heat wave a couple weeks ago. Shortly after, I noticed some of the new fruit showed signs of end bloom rot. This is a black spot that appears at the bloom end of the fruit. It is the result of a calicium deficency and is characteristic of elongated produce such as roma tomatos and peppers. The vascular walls of the elongate fruit does not always adequately carry calcium to the end of the fruit. I stepped up the irrigation and seemed to have solved the problem (fingers crossed).
My monikor comes from my family's former ranch Santa Cruz Farms located outside Eloy, Arizona. The Santa Cruz river runs through the land.

Okra flower yesterday:

Okra today:

And pick it tomorrow.

Okra pickles and tomato pickles already done, along with some pepper sauce I've had working since Christmas.  (Store bought peppers.)

The okra patch and some of the rest of the garden, there is another patch of okra behind the corn just starting to bloom.

And the first planting of turnips.

Still fighting heat and dry, the corn didn't fill out, and the cukes have all died, but I haven't gave up.

So far;  Potatoes, Swiss chard, kale, peas, parsley.  And I managed to fence out those pesky wabbits and the 3d planting of beans seems to be coming along :)

My figs seem to be late, 'though, but lots of 'em.  Wife picked & ate all the cherries before the birds found them.

Our cukes started out good but petered out early.  A tomato worm ate all the leaves off my red bell pepper overnight. >:(  Tomatoes are still producing but they need to be dug up and replaced.  I made fresh tomato sauce today to use as a base for my spaghetti sauce.  Used fresh oregano and basil in it and it was soooooo good.  I'm trying to cut down on processed foods so backing off of white flour and served the spaghetti sauce over rice noodles.  Couldn't tell the difference from it and regular pasta.

Damn tomato worms.

Well the one worm that I found yesterday wasn't the only one.  Stump found 3 more last night eating the fresh leaves on the tomato plants and I found a small one this morning.  Those things eat a lot in a small amount of time.

Make sure you don't have petunias near, that will help.  Your's could be coming from tobacco fields if you have any nearby ones, same worm raises hell with that.

If you see any of those Sphinx Moths often called Humming Bird Moths in the evening, practice on moving targets with #9 shot, that's the adult to the worm.

Oh!  It says if you see one with white spots to leave it because they are infected with parasitic wasps that will kill the rest!

Despite drought and hard times, I'm not a total failure as a corn farmer this year.  I just went out and picked what I had for sweet corn, all dried up of course, no ear filled out enough to eat.  I got my seed back and maybe a little profit, saved about $10 for next year.
