   Greetings!

A careful cleaning, and that would be a Dandy!

A very nice example of what appears to be an untouched rifle! You just can't hardly find them like that today.

As for cleaning, be gentle....very, very, gentle because it took 150 years to acquire that color.

Two Flints - she is a beauty - I assume you pulled the forearm off and checked the barrel number to make sure it matched - the only reason I ask is that the rust on the barrel looks different than the "patina" on the rest of the rifle. Do you think this is a diverted Mass rifle from the last run, or a post war rifle? Just wondering......

Good luck with it - if you decide to go ...

Thanks all,

The rifle is in the Massachusetts contract serial number range 22,000-24,000 and 28,000. Governor John Andrew of MA purchased a large number of Spencers from the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company and issued them to several MA Volunteer Infantry units assigned to the Army of the Potomac.

I don't own it yet so I can't take it apart PCR to check the serial #, but I'm pretty sure that won't be an issue.  The "patina" is pretty consistent all across the rifle so maybe my photos are the problem.

I've already prepared a letter to various archive venues in Boston to try to find out more about the Andrew purchase of Spencer Firearms, and maybe some personal leg work will follow.  But, I'm getting ready to go back to my home in Northern Maine, so there isn't much time to do any real research.

56-56,or should be. I used to own one from hthis serial range.
Check the bore, but it'll probably shoot great. Two Flints has great notes on shooting originals.
Great rifle!

Well Two Flints you say "Any comments" so I shall simply say "Me like - Me want"

Great rifle and I for one would be very happy to have it.

The Owsiak bullet would work great in this rifle. They hold plenty of lube for the long trip down the barrel.
