I just picked up ALL of the Clint Eastwood western movies from Amazon. The DVD "Josey Wales" had a bunch of extra chapters on the making of this 30 year old movie. Lots of interviews with present day Clint who starred and directed it. A bunch of interviews from the main actors who reminisce about it some many years later.

It is really amazing how they attempted to keep it very period correct (except for the cap and ball conversions three years ahead of time.......)

It shows how different scenes were filmed and how they moved all over the country in 8.5 weeks. From Northern California, to the Desert SW to Missouri. How Clint wanted it filmed in the fall for the proper sun height and the colors on the trees.

Lots of discussion on the thought that went into the portrayal of the American Indian.

Clint feels that if this movie was released today, it would walk away with all kind of academy awards.

Believe Clint would be right. One of the best and one of my favorites, if not all time. Just about wore out a VHS copy of it, have played my DVD version so many times, I bought a new one just as a backup (was a impulsive buy at the time, but one well worth it). A good friend and longtime shootin pard and I quote many of the scrip lines in our conversation and e-mail exchanges. Need another like movie coming down the pike. 'Endeavour to persevere'!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ain't I right labuJ???

And let's not forget the Canadian connection ....

The late Chief Dan George ranks up there as one of the all time great native actors. "We didn't surrender. They made my horse surrender. They got him pulling a wagon up in Kansas." He also played a great role in "Little Big Man". I loved it when he wiped his greasy hands on his new felt hat to "waterproof it".

And John Vernon, the guy who played Fletcher (I think), the sympathetic tracker who in the end let "Josie Wales" go, saying that he must either be dead or in Mexico, so he was going to look for him there. All the while Wales was standing there dripping blood ......

One of my favorite "Clint" movies is Unforgiven. The retribution scene at the end is one hell of a scene.

Also, it's the movie that made me love Schofield's even more than i already do.

My other favorites are his Spaghetti westerns.

This topic and the posts got me so riled up(and I didn't even have a Cuban cigar to smoke-ie. from the movie 'Open Range'), I watched "Josey Wales" last night. I've got a whole bunch of lines from the movie refreshed in thee ol' skull. Think I'll head for my favorite shooting spot along a local river and do some riverbankin' today with some cap and balls, but don't think I'll spit 'chaw juice' on my dogs head. "Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms"!
