Howdy Yall, I'm interested in finding different patterns for ball pouchs, possibles bags and other assorted leather goods to make items for myself when i'm out muzzle loader hunting. Also interested in a rifle sheath for my Sharp's. I'm trying to keep everything simple but serviceable since the last time i did any leather work was in high school back in the 70's.  I may even try a holster for my Blackhawk  or Walker Colt w/extra cylinder pouch.

One of the "Buckskinning" books had a chapter in it on traditional hunting pouches that was good - it showed a number of different styles, etc.  I don't remember how many of these books there were as they were a series - "Buckskinning", "Buckskinning II" and so on.  I'm not where I can get to mine or I could tell you which volume it was in - maybe someone here can chime in and tell 'ya. I don't even know if they are still in print or not - try Track of the Wolf, Jas. Townsend & Son, and some of those.  Or, you might even do a search on Amazon for them - there might be some used ones listed?

Several of the cap and ball holster pattern sets offered by Tandy included patterns for small accessory pouches.  The Stohlman 3 book series on making cases and pouches had dozens of patterns with instructions that would show custom building techniques.  There were two or three mountain man and indian craft books available from Tandy that had multiple patterns on making early style pouches.  HMMM, might start yore search with Tandy!

Thanks Pards. I'll take a look and follow your suggestions. I have found a couple of other sites that deal with tanned leather and patterns but I wanted to get advice from folks that have been working with leather work for a while. I'm not looking at making anything fancy or a work of art. Just stuff that is simple yet durable and will fit in with the different eras, ie: mountainman, plainsman, buff hunter/meat hunter and such. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

The best resource I know of is 'Recreating the 18th century Hunting Pouch' by T. C. Albert, published by Track of the Wolf.

I also agree on the T.C. Albert book, it's got a couple patterns and lots of pictures. Only thing I didn't care for is he didn't put a welt in the sheath, very dangerous.

The Buckskinning series of books is available from Scurlock Publishing.  They are the Publisher's of Muzzle Loader Magazine.  Madison Grant wrote the best book on the Rifle Pouch ever, IMO.  The Grant books are long out of print, but if you can find one it is worth having.
