Yep, hubris got me today.
"Hubris is exaggerated pride or self-confidence often resulting in retribution."
Yep, that's me, wearing a corset and shooting a '73. I thought I was fine, no hot brass was going to burn
my
skin, I always dressed modestly under the corset so everything was covered.
HA!
I was wearing an underdress with a drawstring neckline. And guess who did not have that drawstring pulled tight enough, guess who had that neckline, though still modest, just a little too low?
The gods of
hot
brass taught me a lesson and sent that round from Minny right down the front of my dress. It was on shot number 6, I believe. 7 was a clear miss. 8 and 9 were somehow hits, but I can't claim it was because of me. Poor Minny, I think I threw him on the table. Revolvers were next but @#$% the revolvers, there's hot brass burning flesh here!
"@#%!%! @%^@$@ THAT'S HOT!" as my hand dove into the front of my corset, digging out the brass, which was still hot, and flinging it as hard as I could down range. ( I throw like a gerl and it was my off hand. The brass didn't go very far.)
Then I drew the revolvers, while my poor, tender flesh was screaming
"pain!!pain!!pain!!"
into my head. I shot. I didn't get a P, didn't drop the revolvers, and generally shot in the direction of the targets.
"pain!!pain!!pain!!"
"Getthisoverwith,#$!$!thisHURTS!" Took four misses with the revolvers. Didn't care. Shoot the shotgun, knock the targets down, don't care there, either.
"pain!!pain!!pain!!"
Grab the longarms, go to the unloading table, set them down and just hang my head and sag against the table and just.... breathe.
For those of you thinking "Oh, man, that had to leave a mark," yep, it did. I have a cartridge length burn welt in one place, and a circular welt above that, where I reckon the rim of the brass hit before it dropped down.
And how was your day, Dear?
The match was still fun.
AnnieLee, who is going to check her neckline
before
shooting from now on.

Aw, heck, Rio, it's not like I was permanently damaged! I'm glad you got a laugh. I was laughing about it too, but only after apologizing to the posse for the language that came rolling out of my mouth.
Vern... don't take your belt for granted! That derned hot brass will getcha if it can!

Damn, Annie. Why'd ya throw the brass away. It'd cool down so ya could load it again.

I had hot brass from my '73 rifle go down the front of my shirt at my last match. HOT BRASS! Ms. Annielee, like you, it left a little memento on my hide. (Birdgun tips his hat.) Ms. Annielee, ya done good to complete the stage without a procedure or safety.
Recommend Arcey gets at least a visit from Leigh Ping for his lack of sensitivity.

One of the other shooters kidded about this and suggested that AnnieLee get penalized for spouting improper language but Leigh Ping came out of her holster and threatened to give him the ol' KA-BONG. He quieted down quickly at that point.

Now Arcey,
Where are your manners? You shouldn't be yellin at Miz Annie about throwin brass away. You should be offering to apply first aide to the afflicted area...
Perhaps some ice or maybe some burn salve...Geesh...all Ya ever think about is brass, Ya should be thinkin of Yer fellow shooters well being

Naw, I was soft-touching Minny all day and already had two misses. That's why the brass wasn't flying as high as it should, normally it lands on my hat.

Yep, it was while I was apologizing. What I said, as I was pulling Leigh Ping was: "How about penalties for 'interpersonal conflict'?" *
Arcey, I'll remember your ... empathy.
Thank you for the ... uh... thought, Major!

When I was talking about my experience with hot brass, a lady provided this comment:
"I have a Marlin and a '73 and am left handed. I'd be DOOMED if not for wide brimmed hats, high collars and long sleeves!"
Now I wonder who said that?

Aww heck. Had my sleeves all rolled up last weekend. Shootin' a Marlin left handed, had one fall up (down) mah right sleeve. I shoot the One True Powder of the Holy Light (had to stand to type that) 'n it makes brass real hot. Kept on shootin'. Heck, it fell out when I went fer mah shotgun. Quit hurtin' by Wednesday.
Reckon that's the difference twix real men, metrosexuals 'n wimmen.

That would've been me, Birdgun, there's a reason this thread is titled "Hubris"!
Bah and feh, Arcey. I kept shooting, too, even though that brass wasn't about to fall out, it had to be removed. The one time I rolled up my sleeves when I was shooting the Marlin, I caught brass in the crook of my right elbow.
That
mark took three weeks to go away.
We can start comparing scars when you start shooting in a corset!
Come on up to King George. I'll treat you like the <cough> gentleman you are.

AnnieLee, I am devistated by your injury. I also think it was cruel what these other pards were suggesting, louts all that they are. I trust your injury will heal quickly and you'll be back in top form.
The rest of you, shame, shame.
I have to go see a grief counselor now.
