'58 Pistol Nipple Access Enlargement
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:49:53 PM »
Has anyone done this cylinder access modification listed in comment in this thread?

If so,how does it affect the cylinder strength?

And does anyone know if it passes muster for NCOWS competition?

Has nothing to do with cylinder strength since the mod is behind where it goes boom.

I have made this modification on four 1858 cylinders.  The last one using a ball end mill after Pettifogger pointed out how it looked so much better.  The change makes the cylinder really easy to prime.

I've got the nipples removed from 4 of my cylinders ( finally ). . . via soaking with penetrating oil, tapping with a punch, soaking more, . . finallly getting them to move and then using a home made nipple wrench ( made out of a socket ).  I'll be getting a grinder for opening up the access when I'm in town next monday.
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

I believe it will hasten caps falling off and into the timing mechanism ...

but here is how mine turned out;

That is with new Treso/Ampco nipples ....

Or modify the capper instead.

Ball cutter mounted in a drill press, scrap wood guide and stop clamped to the bed of the drill press.

Jig built to hold the cylinder and while you advance along the guide until stopped.Pop the cylinder off, rotate to present another well for cutting. Use cutting oil, go somewhat slow. You adjust your length of travel so that the ball completes its cut but never touches the inner wall of the nipple well.

Wadd, caps do not fall in mainly because there is not the gap in the rear of the frame where the hammer goes, such as on a Colt clone. The other half of the equation is changing out to Treso nipples or similar, which hold the caps for a snug fit through the detonation process.

RCJ,

Did, did and done on both the Treso nipples as well as the access enlargement ... just haven't taken it out to shoot it ... Sacramento has forced most gun shops and shooting ranges out of it's city limits, so it is $20 (or more) just to drive to a shooting range .... sigh ... wish I got to do more shooting in than I do ....
