Can anyone help identify this old Colt?
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:09:39 PM »
My friend found this old Colt among his fathers belongings in a safe after he died a few years back. He said he has had it since sometime in the '60s. Can anyone tell me what it is and maybe a general idea what it would sell for? Some say it some kind of reproduction from an unknown year. It looks like it was chromed at some point, and it is flaking off a bit in areas.

I also noticed a strange stamp on the right grip. It looks like a crown with an E8 under it. It almost looks like those proof stamps they use in England. Anyone ever see one of those on an 1851

Joe,
The serial number 0f 25,706 puts it in the year range of 1854 if it is authentic.

It looks real and has the correct markings, font styles and serial number positions.  It appears  to be a third model "small" round trigger guard 1851 that has been refinished at some point.

Yep, 51 Navy.  Chrome plaing does, however, completely destroy any collector value.

Could it be a London 51, and maybe Canadian ?

It can be restored. It'll never have the value of a gun that hasn't been restored but if it has an unusual history, like it's a London Colt or maybe used in Canada, then it will have some kinda value.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

is there any  website that is a definitive resource for these guns? maybe there are little things to check for that set the real originals apart from the replicas.
