I hear that the Uberti's with the longer Colt cylinder did away with the gas ring to accomadate the longer cylinder.
Not quite correct. The ring is still there, but it is much too short to be of any use keeping BP fouling away from the cylinder pin.
I don't own a Russian or a Schofield, but I do own a New Model Number Three, made in 1882, and a 44 Double Action made in 1881. Both are chambered for 44 Russian. Both will shoot Black Powder loads all day long without binding.
But it is important to use a bullet that carries lots of BP compatible bullet lube.
