Well , there we are, some opposing viewpoints!
Gentlemen pray tell what particularly keeps you watching?
Prior to my disenchantment, I myself was quite taken at the first episode with both the detail of the sets and the remarkable speech to the "investors" by Colm Meany...

Sounds like talking about HOW will not go far in this forum as there are too many nit-pickers.
Moderator, lock the thread... Suspension of disbelief is impossible for too many people on this forum.
Ehh, everyone has a right to their opinion I think and from what I have read, this discussion has been a civil one. I haven't watched this how but I enjoyed Cowboys VS Aliens. To me entertainment doesn't have to be historically accurate to entertain and I don't watch most shows close enough to see if they are shooting a different gun than they had holstered. It is amusing how so many six shooters seem to have a bottomless capacity. It's no different from watching a car chase where if you watch closely you can see the front end of a car getting whomped and yet it comes out of the accident without a scratch.
I wouldn't let someone else's opinion ruin my enjoyment of a show though. If you did that you would have to ignore all the reviewers out there since they only like stuff that no one else watches...oh wait...

I think it has gotten better with each episode, and I am really enjoying it now.
Of course I may be the oddball here as I bought the BlueRay for How The West Was Won, watched the first story and was bored to tears

Hey, I loved Cowboy and Aliens !
These shows are to entertain and make money for the producers. They don't exist to challenge our historical I.Q.
I guess it's OK to notice things ,,but I surely wouldn't let it spoil me off a good story/show. Hell on Wheels I think, has a very good story line going, and personally, it keeps me very interested in what's going to happen with the characters next week.
After growing up watching the Duke carry a '92 win in almost Civil War period, this is pretty dang good.

Professor Marvel
You profess to have enjoyed "Gunless", a light hearted spoof of at least half a dozen cliches scenes from other movies. Did you catch any of them?
How about the metal lined "quick draw" holster worn by Gross vs the period unlined correct leather worn by the supporting actors? How about the Corporal of NWMP wearing a sword, only carried by Officers of Superintendent grade? How about his incorrect tack; a western saddle when it ought to be properly the California-style stock saddle quickly adopted after the long march west? How about the unlikelihood of the blacksmith forge welding the broken hammer on the conversion '51?
I could go on, but it was a good story told well and I'm familiar with the country where it was filmed. I have to admit that part of it's charm was both Gross and his horse farting - him in bed with the leading lady and the horse later in the story behind the story. Probably the best part of the movie for me.
Only other fart I can recall in a movie was the freighter in "Dances With Wolves". Nothing like a good fart to break tension and clear the air .... ;>)

I can give you their address...but I haven't spoken to them since I left 7 yrs ago..they are down in Santa Clarita if you send down what you want autographed I think Jack would do it..the website
www.movinonlivestock.com
should show it. I would call him first. The facebook page doesn't have any of that info. I don't think...his son Clay is in Corrales, NM and has taken over most of the biz....
I'm actually related to his wife Irene and lived on the ranch for 14+ years.

I've worked with Jack Lilley a few times
Jimmy & Sharron Medearis too...
As Boss Wranglers ..they would never say a barouche was freight wagon !!
My issue was not what's used..it was the PropMaster
" in his on screen interview ..he shows the Brass Frame 1860 Army non-clone
and flat out tells US it's a Griswold ...Griswold & Gunnison
sorry Charlie ...I've held that job ( and Production Designer and Art Director )
You should have done your research....

I myself hold the modern westerns to a higher standard than the old ones because it has gotten known out there that we demand a higher standard. Who is happy today with the special effects of the 1950's? We demand a higher standard and we get it, so why shouldn't historical accuracy be the same?

Because its called "historical fiction".
Gettysburg was not fiction, outside of their specific dialog. It was/is a historical movie.
There is hardly anything historically correct about ANY John Wayne western, and for them the history was not all that long ago... Least of all the guns.
Yet, some how, we all kind of agree those were pretty darn good to watch.
No arguing that we don't expect better quality effects and attention to detail, but, does it really disrupt the story that much that others should not enjoy it?

Nobody says you shouldn't enjoy it if that's what you want. My wife watches and enjoys "What Not to Wear" despite the fact that I wouldn't let either show host dress a wino living under a bridge and wouldn't let their hair make-up people cut the hair on a sick poodle.
