Holly wood is one funny 'biz....
Propmasters, livestock contractors, wardrobe suppliers & make up artists ALL have to do their home work for a "period piece".
It must reveal CONSISTANT DAILY continuity to make the end shoot a quality show to be proud of.
Major, I had the same gripe but with the dang actors.....
Most production budgets allow for the principle actors "if required" to ride horseback to come out to the stock contactor's place and learn from "scratch" if need be. Some actors claimed they had some "riding ability" and insisted they had enough and tried crammin' "on set" from the wranglers 2 days before film. Most looked like a "sack o taters" tryin' to ride down the road and to me that reflects the "quality in character". The stock contractor got blamed for not preparing the "principles" and it really isn't their fault. We actually had a gal in '99 -'00 fly herself out to CA from FL wanting to "teach the actors" how to ride...Uh no... there were plenty of us who do know what we're doing..she didn't get it Roll Eyes
There are a few actors that I can name a few big names who had the forethought to learn, but dang few. Most older westerns the actors already knew how to ride and they sat the saddle in fine form.
OK.....off the soapbox......
Stunts and FX has come a long way so that no animal or stunt double are "intentionally harmed" and there will continue to be an odd accident. The depts are regulated now and thank God for that. Wire trippin' livestock was outlawed. We had many, many stunt horses trained to fall and we had a riverbed full of sand to break one or condition one a block away. On set filming the dirt is "prepared" that neither horse or stunt performer falls on the hardpan.
Rick.... if you plan to attend the Santa Clarita Poetry Fest in mid April, you can run into Jack holdin' court at the saloon on Melody Ranch's street. His sister and nieces are barmaids inside and anything you bring down he will autograph for you...as an added bonus Buck Taylor is usually in attendence as they are old buddies from Gunsmoke and Cowboys n' Aliens.
I had my own reasons for leavin' as I had done alot of marketing for the outfit and held a SAG card a few years myself.

Oh great now I have to go and check this out.    Grin

It's on the so called Learning Channel.  Was in the living room one day when it was on, the male host was going through some saps wardrobe and picked up a flowery Hawwian shirt and said, "this looks like something I would have worn the first season of the show."  That's when I said "what the ####."  If it was good enough 10 years ago it should be good enough today?

Now a lot of the folks on the show need help, but not from these two clowns.  Hey, I should get my own show, I'm a fashion consultant for real. Grin

They had a guy with a nice handle bar mustashe on there one time and they cut it clean off.  They they foo foo layered his hair and made him look like a girl.  All he needed was a pair of Wrangler Cowboy Cut, a pearl snap shirt, a decent hat and a pair of Tony Lama's, but no they took him to some fancy gent's shop in NYC and spent enough on clothes to buy a compete set of CAS guns including long range and would have still had enough to buy a decent loading outfit and supplies, plus a decent Old West outfit.

Well, no, I never did watch 'Blazing Saddles'.

OK, I take back what I said about a good fart breaking the tension and clearing the air. Must have been easy for the Paiutes to locate a cowboy camp, depending upon the wind ...... ;>)

Hell on Wheels has turned into a really great show! The story scripting has been terrific.
I saw the season finale last night... Can't wait for season 2.

I was on the fence through the first couple of episodes but it drew me in and I have really enjoyed the series. Looking forward to season 2.

I agree. A lot of series have a rough first season until the writers and actors are in sync with the development of the characters. The first few episodes of HOW were slow moving and a bit disjointed imho, but it has turned into a very watchable show.
I look forward to the 2nd season while I pray for the death of all reality and talent shows. Wink

I have been watching the show since episode 1 and I for one, like it and look forward to the next season.
Being a southern boy myself, I find the story interesting. While not historically accurate, but at least as accurate as "dime novels" of the era, it does make for some good social commentary.

Well, I have read some of the comments and looks like I may be a little different. Buy hey, this is why America is great. I actually have seen all 10 episodes and have completely enjoyed Hell on Wheels. I was disappointed when "24" ended as I was hooked on it. I have found that "hooked" feeling again with Hell on Wheels. Can't wait until seson 2. And, the wife loves it as well, so this is something we can enjoy together. (only my 2 cents)  Smiley

Hey, I liked "24" myself. Loved seeing what kinda impossible situation Jack would be in on the next episode.

So, who's watching season 2?

2 episodes so far. They're in a groove of making every episode similar in dark tone. HOW is still one of the best shows on TV.

AMC is also starting a new 6 week series called "into the west" that looks quality too and will be on Sunday nights just before HOW.

I too am enjoying HOW. Into The West is not a new series but I am glad to see them running it again. It is a Speilberg series that was made in 2005.

Hell on Wheels has gotten better. But hey its the only western we have going now. So I'll watch it to the end. Into The West was fairly good mini series. It is at least mostly historically correct in its back drop for the story line.
