Why is it that I was thinking that straw western hats were NOT allowed in costuming? I seem to remember reading that somewhere,or am I wrong? down here in San Antonio we wear felt/fur/cloth hats in the Winter and straw hats in the Summer.   It's sort of like women who don't wear white shoes after Labor Day. In any respect, are straw hats legal or not?

Straw (or palm leaf) hats are not allowed in Classic Cowboy category (and I'm not positive about B-Western) but are allowed in all other categories.

Straw hats are fine except the two costume categories. All the rules can be found here;
SASS Handbooks

Shooters Handbook page 16
Classic Cowboy
no straw or palm hats allowed.

B-Western
Felt hats only, no straw hats. Hats must be worn.

Sorry Bugs ...it's been some time since I first shot SASS ... late eighties.
The rules then were no Shaddy Brady's  ( Petty style straw hats ) that's the way it was written in the SASS handbook.

I know the rules evolved to include:  Matinee's Idle's  B-Western , Classic Cowboy & even Wild Bunch.
My bad, I just did not keep up with the times .....

Funny how many "Classic Cowboys" from the 19th Century would not fit the rules for that class in SASS.   Grin

I'd offer this Drawing by Fredrick Remington  Cracker Cow Hunters circa 1890
