IAC 97 - Shells occasionally hang up in the mag tube.

I've been concentrating on Wild Bunch so I have been stoking the mag tube with 6 shells.

Every now and then a shell will hang up on the lip at the mag tube / receiver junction as it is coming out of the tube and into the receiver.

Is it ok to grind and polish smooth the lip down a bit?

I'm wondering if I do that, it may allow the follower to pass right into the reciever?

Any ideas to fix this problem?

Since you said "Occasionally" and I can't actually see where the interference is ...... no.

Removing metal is always "iffy."  You pays your money and takes your chances.  If your a whiz with a welder and have a line boring machine .... let 'er rip!!  Otherwise ........ be real careful.

Is your IAC 97 a takedown? I had that problem with my Win 97 takedown. The problem proved to be at the junction of the mag tube and the receiver. It is possible to mount the front end to the receiverand turn the locking mechanism not quite far enough. It will allow the front end to mate up ok, but leave a tiny gap between the mag tube and the receiver that the edge of the shell catches on. It is especially true if the edge of the cartridge base is very thin as in the Win AA shells. Just make sure that the mag tube is FULLY mated to the receiver when you turn the mag tube to lock it in and you'll be all right.

Not sure I've seen a tajkedown IAC 97....??

I think the problem is related to the cartridge stops / springs. They are easy to remove. Might want to clean/polish.lube the friction surfaces of the stops.....you can also lighten/strengthen the springs as needed.

If you end up with a shell flipping out past the stops and onto the ground as you chamber one round, you'll need to stiffen the springs up a bit.

Thanks for the replies.  You all have given me some ideas to consider.

As for the cartridge stops.  I was dry firing tonight and all of the sudden the action locked up.  I found one of the tiny cartridge stop screws had fallen out.  Took 30 minutes to find it in the carpet.  Didn't really know what I was looking for.  I thought it was a roll pin till I saw it in the carpet.

I'm guessing the Inox oil I used is really too slippery and allowed the screw to come loose.  Took 'em both out, cleaned 'em and put 'em back in with a touch of lock tite.

I'm wondering what will fall off next?

I got an IAC 97 (used) and had a similar problem. The screw on the left side (right side when the gun is upside down) had loosened and the threads on the screw were worn from being loose. The shell stop then jammed things up. I talked with someone at IAC when I ordered a new screw and he said that the screw on that side tended to unscrew due to the action of the shell stops twisting the screw when they moved.

He suggested blue locktite. I did that and the problem has not reappeared.

That's all I understand about what I know about it.
