The short ones are usually made to fit into the top of a woodstove when you remove one of the hole covers and the unit spins sitting in the hole.  The tall ones work on a gas range or something similar and spins above the heat source.
Well.... see, if you take your time, you get a more harmonious outcome.

I had one in my teen years and did not have much luck with it outdoors.  Worked best if you got it fairly warm on coals, cooked your waffle on residual heat, then returned it to coals to reheat for the next waffle.  I am partial to cornbread waffles, work as breakfast or with chili meat and beans on it.

1 1/2 cups AP flour
1 1/2 cups cornmeal
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
2 cups milk
2 eggs-beaten
2 Tbsp oil

Mix dry ingredients together.  In separate bowl, blend wet.  Combine and let sit for about 5 minutes before cooking them, will make them lighter.  Great with corn syrup, molassess, maple syrup.  Or with refried beans, salsa, meat and cheese.
