loading 44-40 for modern 1892 and 1885 low wall
« on: May 28, 2011, 06:30:00 PM »
I would like to uup the velocities for my 44-40 rifles for long range shooting but all the new loading manuals are conservative with velocities up to 1090 fps.  I would like to get into the 1200-1400 fps if possible.  Does anyone hav loading date to achieve this?

PET LOADS, by Ken Waters has a reprint of an article in HANDLOADER from September 1974.  I'm sure Wolfe Publishing has it available.  A lot depends on your bullet.  For "group II" which the '92 & Hi-Wall would be, he recommends a Lyman 42798 cast bullet load at about 1420 fps with Herco as his "best cast bullet load at higher than normal velocities".

I don't want to give it out for fear of misleading users of weaker actions. Anyone can PM me if they wish to follow up.
