Do you guys that load 5744 or any other smokeless in 45-70, 45-90 etc,,,use fillers, wads are anything to eliminate air space in the case ? or is even necessary with smokeless powders ?

I would stick to 5744.  You wouldn't need fillers with it  Check the Accurate Arms web site for a load and comments on it.  Mike Daley of Hodgon's doesn't like fillers of any sort and he is a balitition (spl?).  Things like corn meal can migrate into the powder charge and change the burning rate.  Mike Venturino in his book "SHOOTING BUFFALO RIFLES OF THE OLD WEST" warns against the use of fillers like Dacron because he has seen too many ringed barrels with it's use.

Use the 40% rule with 5744. Using a base of 70 grs charge weight for a 45-70/50-70, that extrapolates to 28 grs of 5744.
Been using it for years in my Shilohs. No fillers needed. Shoots into the same group as my BP loads.
I've tried 30 grs and all it does is increase recoil and widen the group.

PJ, what bullet are you shooting with the 28 grains  of 5477 ?

I shoot mostly a Lyman .525gr lead round nose.

What calibre?

In .50 I'm shooting the Lyman 515141 weighing whatever it does (425-450 grs) with the metal in the pot at the time. I'm not religious about that, but I do have a mix that seems to work. In 45-70 I like my Lyman 420 gr RNFPs and 350 gr RNFPs with 28/5744. I don't have much use for 500+ gr bullets as I'm a hunter, not into BPCR silhouette.

Some of the good ol' boys on the Shiloh site are an opinionated bunch of curmudgeons, but there is a lot of knowledge and experience there. If you challenge the popular opinion, some will go to the 'automatic default' of attacking the person rather than his position or argument (ad hominem attack), but that is to be expected. It says volumes about the attacker, his lack of vocabulary, powers of expression and strength of his convictions.

has anybody tried unique,trail boss,or imr3031 powders with 405 lead bullet with sadisfactory results?45-70 been expermenting not real happy with results

I actually did have good luck with IMR 3031, but after I started using AA5744, I never looked back. 3031 left a lot of turds in the barrel...

Jeff, most of the ringed barrles I have seen or heard of were with Unique and some type of filler.  In a pinch, if I didn't have anything else, say in a surival situation I might use it.  But I would be sure to point my muzzle up before I shot.

Did you talk to Johann Loubser at Accurate?  He really knows his stuff about interior ballistics!
