I just aquired an early single six flatgate that is a fantastic shooter but the bluing is looking a little tired. The grips are a broken pair of a Jay Scott.  It has not been "upgraded" with the transfer bar.  Do you wizards of wisdom think I should send it back to ruger for a facelift?

If you send it in to Ruger it will come back converted to an updated lock work rather you want it or not. The gun is worth more to me with the original lock work in it. My guess is that if you dont have the original grips then I bet the grips are in the box and you dont have that or the manual either. The gun is basically a shooter grade as it stands and if you feel you need it refinished to enjoy it more than go ahead but remember that any improvements you make to it will not add to its value. All that being said I would look for a good quality gunsmith close by to do the work so you dont have to have the added exspence of the handgun shipping charges. Now if you got some money to burn Bowen Classic Arm's does a package called the "Western Classic Conversion" and it comes with a complete refinish as well as a tune.
