Doc style cane
« on: August 18, 2021, 01:25:41 PM »
Does anyone know of a source for a Doc type of cane?  One without the ridiculous rubber tip and the more period ferule.

Doc type of cane?

I have no idea what that is. Educate me, please.

I checked them both out and they do not offer one with a metal or modified ferule. Only the rubber tip.

Is the rubber tip removable?

RC John. Yes.  Silver knob.  The tip is what I was looking for.  Is that a brass tip or ferule? I was on Canesgalore site and they will do a brass tip as an add on.

Yes. Brass ferrule as tip on walnut cane, 10k gold head with presentation engraving inscription dated 1888. (Made from wood from U.S. Grant's home work desk in Galena, ILL.)

No - actual Blackthorn has those as a part of the makeup of the wood.

The nubs are bases of thorns  cut down.
Blackthorn is a flowering thorn shrub of the Rose family native of Western Europe.
The Fruit is made into a slue Gin and Jam....
The wood is used to make walking sticks, including the Irish shillelagh, that date back many century's
I have a couple.

However the Cold Steel version is a molded poly urethane made to resemble the real Root ball and stem of a
Blackthorn walking stick, It is formable defense carry stick.as is the real thing....

You could always go the "DIY" route.  I needed a ferrule for a walking stick a few years ago and ordered one off eBay.  Just needed to know the diameter of the tip of the stick.

I have seen modified sewing thimbles used as cane tips.

I have made a cane tip from a .45 ACP-case with the extractor-rim ground / filed down.
Fixed it in place with a small brass screw through the primer-pocket hole.

For a larger diameter cane I replaced the bulky modern-looking rubber-tip with the culot from a 20 ga. shotgun shell.  Glued a round piece of leather on the end of it to give it some grip on hardwood floors.

Visit your local farm and ranch store. You should be able to find a livestock sorting cane. All wood construction and sturdy. You could customize it any way you like.
