Poll

What's your opinion of Wild Bunch (WB) matches?

WB needs to be left as a side match at a CAS event.
WB should become it's own independent shooting sport.
It's OK to mix WB shooters in with cowboy shooters at a CAS match.
I hate WB matches, they shouldn't exist.
I don't care.

If WB becomes its own independent shooting sport it could be divided into classes. [Authentically people didn't carry two long guns no matter what time period.]

In regard to carrying two long arms, I guess I always assumed / imagined that in the battle you were picking up guns as yours ran out and the fight was still going on. In the WB movie final scene they didn't bring the MG (with them that day) but they sure used it well.

That is a very good point.  I've been haranging folks for ages re two long arms being inappropriate and no one has made the point you made.  It is valid for a military/battle senario.  But to do it right; when your long arm is empty you would lay it down an pick up someone else's.  Sounds like a good Idea for a stage.

Howdy Book, WB already is it's own independent sport/game, complete with local, state, regional, and national matches. The two categories are Modern and Tradional. SASS has never claimed to be authentic or historically accurate, it's more of a fantasy game/sport. The WB gang has purty much sald these are the rules and they ain't gonna change em, however locally you can put yer own spin on things, we do. Good Luck :)

Lesson is everyone should know how to use an AK47
::) Let's see, aren't these the main lessons about using an AK in most countries that issue them(?):

1. Point AK in general direction of target
2. Yank back HARD on trigger
3. Hold trigger back until magazine is empty.
4. Repete as neccesary or until out of magazines
5. Use as club on target

A variation on the "official" SASS Wild Bunch rules, and one which I like very much, is where you use your 1911 for one set of pistol targets, and your "regular" single action for the other set.  This combined with your 97 pump and your rifle.  This is the way the match is shot at TRAILHEAD at the Texas HIstorical Shootists Society, and during their local matches when they shoot Wild Bunch.  As a point, the Wild Bunch match was being shot this way every October there in Columbus long before SASS established any rules concerning it.

I like it, because it has more of the "flavor" of the movie, with being able to shoot both your 1911 and your Single Action revolver.

Just my $0.02 worth,
Jake

To the Fie,

Ok pards, back on topic and d i v e r t ' n from this here AK business......everybody knows how to shoot em.  As for Wold Bunch, we, locally, have the category extra at the monthly matches.  We do try to shoot the pistols last but, since it's been such a light crowd since end of last year, don't make much difference.....people just bring the guns they have to shoot and we try to work them in the best we can....some just don't fit.

But, the Wild Bunch cat. has had one or two at every match, as of late.  An every body shooting it and watch'n it has a good bit of fun with it.

Just my 2 cents.........................Brizco-Z

I'm happy to make sense every now and again.  ;D

A local club that I shoot at has a Military Class and shot a stage that illustrated that assumption well at their annual.

You start a port arms with your bolt action rifle engaging riflemen at 100 yards. Upon exhausting your supply of ammo you drop your rifle and pick up a 97 that a fallen comrade has relinquished. You sweep the wire of Villa-istas that are rushing your position. Realizing that the units MG has fallen silent, with an injured gunner, you drop the the SG and dash 5 yards to the M1919 and fire off the remainder of the belt (only 10 rounds; PRK after all)  into the enemy ranks. Finally as a replacement gunner takes over reloading, you sprint to cover a gap in the line, routing  a bayonet charge whilest firing your issued 1911 and 2 mags.
Lets see that's 34 dead and 166 litter bearers!  ;D

Best W.B. stage I've ever enjoyed!  :o

It took me 4 years to realize that 45's cost too much to reload so every Cowboy gun we have now shoots 38's! And I suck with a '97' so went to sxs.  I aint gonna' buy a new rifle and shotgun to just shoot a "Side Match" a few times a year!

Yes. I have had a 1911 for many years but it's the SHTF gun!

Of the clubs I shoot, there are two who do not allow Wild Bunch.  There are two who allow it mixed in with the regular monthly cowboy matches but all WB are on the same posse.  There are two clubs who hold a seperate WB match as a stand alone event.  I think it is a growing endeavor and participants are fewer.

With that said, last weekend I shot my first Wild Bunch match.  I borrowed a '97 and had familiarized myself with the rules.  I had pards help me along and here was my take off on it after the match.

I had fun, period.  However, it was so different from my normal cowboy action shooting that I felt I was in a different world.  For that reason, from my own personal experience, I feel it should be a side match or a stand alone event.  I would do it again, seriously, and would look forward to shooting my 30 40 Krag when possible.  But its not cowboy.

Where are you from Rev? There might be a GAF Expansion Era Match near you. Quite similar to WB, but we encourage military rifles of the period.

Wild Bunch Action Shooting is not Cowboy Action Shooting with a 1911!!

WBAS is not a CAS side match!

WBAS is an independent sport!

WBAS is not a category in CAS!

WBAS is not a historical reenactment!

WBAS is a fantacy sport!

WBAS should not be shot and scored concurrent with a CAS match!

It's a great shooting sport.  I like it!   If I had to make a choice, I would choose WBAS over CAS.  Your mileage may vary.

I like having it as a side match but don't see any reason why it can't  grow independently as well.

I've yet to shoot in a WB scenario, but I'd love to. I'm trying to get it off the ground locally. Most of us have the guns already, including military rifles of the era -  Mausers, Springfields, etc.
It will bring out a lot of turn-of-the-century guns that don't often see the light of day - Colt NS, Triple Lock S&Ws, Webleys, Mauser Broomhandles, Lugers, etc.

I'm all for developing new aspects to the shooting sports. It's all fun. Let's hope it doesn't get beaten to death with rules upon rules and classes upon classes ......

I watched SASS devolve into IPSC in Cowboy clothes, disregarding the power factor utterly. Anyone who can tolerate SASS ought not to have issues with someone hanging onto a 1911 shooting GI hardball equivalent loads.
The open range west was effectively over with the advent of barbed wire. New guns were rapidly developing, overlapping the guns that won/tamed the west.
