I think it is still used some in the so called 3rd world countries.  Also as a side note the code used by RR's and Western Union is slightly different than what was used by rodio operators.

I believe the correct term for the telagraph code is Morse code and the term for the other is International Morse Code.

Delmonico you again are right it is Morse not Morris....It's been years sence I've seen much more than a shot on an old Western, using it.  I believe theRR's now use Motorola's(Sp?)

The reason Amatur Radio opperators are/were required to learn code was that in case of evergency it it easier to jury rig a code trasmitter than a voice one.  Also it is easier to read code than voice if the signal is weak.
