1851 Cylinder Base Pin
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:31:51 PM »
I need some help if someone out there can help me.

I am rebuilding an Pietta 1851 Navy Steel Frame .36 Caliber and I need a newCylinder  Base Pin.

I spoke to VTI and they are on back order until October, seems the Italian Manufactuers are all on vacation and VTI does not have any in stock or expect a shipment until late Sept or early October.

I would be extremely greatful if some has one they would part with or could tell me where to find one.

Thanks for any help.

You might also try Cimarron, they have a parts section on their website.  I have dimensions from David Chicoine's book if you have a friend with a lathe...

You might also try Taylor & Company Guns.  They sell quite a few Piettas and have some parts.  Out of curiosity, what is wrong with your base pin (arbor)?

Thanks for the suggestions.

To answer about the arbor, I bought the Revolver in pieces and the previous owner had lost several of the parts.

He was trying to install a R&D Conversion Cylinder and had difficulty so he gave up and sold me the gun but not the conversion kit.

He told me that the Cylinder would not fit over the arbor so he took it off and attempted to file it down and when that did not work out he threw it (the arbor) away.

I have checked with all of the vendors suggested and some others I found on the Internet, no one has one at this time.

Would any one on CAS City have a used one they would be willing sell?

Again, Thanks for any help.

warbucks16-
I realize you are looking for a base pin for a Pietta, however, I have a base pin for an Uberti '51 and was wondering if it might be made to work in your Pietta.

Here are some specs that might help you see if it's close enough to be modified:

 5/16X24 thread
.432" diameter on the grease grooves
3.155" length not including the threaded end
Threaded part is .375" long

This base pin was in a basket case Uberti '51 I bought and the pin had at one time been bent in the wedge slot. The former owner decided to file the bend out of it so it fit loose in the barrel assembly. The diameter around the slot varies from .418"-.421".

If you think it'll be of any use to you and want to fool with it, get your address to me and I'll stick it in the mail-you can have it.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can try Dixie Gun Works....I suggest calling to describe your revolver... They do sell Pietta as well as Uberti Revolvers.....& parts as well.

Montana Slim:

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried them and they are out also it seems that the Cylinder Pin Monster has ate them all and there won't be any more until Late Sept or Oct.

But I do appreciate the effort.

Just a note Someone has tried to send me an E-mail and my Spam Program keeps rejecting it before I can read it.

If anyone needs to get in touch with me please send me a PM-Personal Message thru CAS City.

Again, Thanks for all the help.

Unfortunatly it is highly doubtfull that the Uberti Arbor pin is going to work in your Pietta as the Uberti cylinder is .020 shorter than the Pietta and therefore the Arbor pin will also be .020 shorter.

Sorry
Raven

I do have a blank that you would be welcome to, but it will need to be threaded and the wedge slot cut. I will measure it and see if it is long enough when I get back in the shop on monday.

It's pretty easy to add a bit of length to the base pins. Even the Uberti replacement for my '51 Navy was too short, so I tapped 8-32 threads into the end by the slot, shortened and fit a lock bolt (for a m/l lock) with a 1/2" diameter head to add length. Then I turned it to the proper diameter and faced it off a bit at a time until I had the proper length. You'd think they'd make them somewhat long to begin with so they could be fit without a hassle but that's the way it goes.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions.

I think I found a used one from Numrich Arms.

I had placed an order monday and they had put it on backorder.

I got an E-mail late last night that one had come in and they were shipping it, should have it by the 26th.

Hope it's the right one.

Again, thanks for all the help.

If you need help or advice fitting it, ask me and/or Pettifogger  (I'm offering his advice without consulting him, however)...  A new or spare part arbor will probably not be friendly enough to screw in and clock up to wedge alignment, and may need either a shim or a shoulder cut to get the wedge slot aligned.  Make sure the protruding threaded portion at the rear is trimmed to flush with the frame so it doesn't interfere with the hammer fired position.

At any rate, there are people on the net here that can help.

One advice is to thread the locking pin hole and use a #6 set screw instead of a solid pin to lock the arbor, this will ease any possible future removal or adjustment.  If the arbor came out of another gun, hopefully the locking pin cut and the wedge slot will agree with each other, if not you may have to relocate the lock.  Also make sure the arbor is right side up, as the wedge slot may be tapered to match the wedge.

Flint:

Thank you for the advice, I may need it when the pin comes.

I think I have it figuredout, I am going to dry fit all the parts and hope it all fits before making any permanent installation, but if that doesn't work I will probably need lots of advice.

Thanks again.

 :)

I would like to thank all of you that commented for all the help and advice, especially Lone Oak.

I finally got a Base Pin from Numrich Arms and thanks to Lone Oak for sending the old pin so I knew what not to do.

She is all together and shooting.  I fired a few rounds out the back door in to my shooting tree stump  and it works great.

After seeing the old pin that Lone Oak sent I decided I did not want to use a regular pressed in pin to keep the barrel stable,

instead I used a Socket Screw so if I need to remove it I don't have to go to the drill press, just get out my allen wrench.

I installed a .38 Long Colt Kirst Konverter after talking to Raven who i also would like to thank, and it works perfectly with no timing adjustments needed.

Again thanks to all.
