Is you guys with knife collections,how do you store or display your knives,i need some ideas..

GCR - Below are a couple photos per your inquiry: Knives (side knives are all repros, a couple are de-farbed but the better quality knives are as-purchased) are in the top shelf of a curio cabinet in my living room; Razors are on the top shelf of a book case of my library in a vintage copper shaving cup. My original butchers, skinners, steels, etc are not displayed anywhere but are with my buffalo hunter living history stuff.

As you can see these are 'in sight storage' as there is no real effort to make a fancy display though still nice to look at. Also, I need to do some dusting based on the pictures. Yikes!






Not sure if such a set-up suits your needs but there it is.

Rick, in your travels you should look for some vintage or a little more modern glass display cabinets, like the ones in jewelry shops. You can find them in places that buy out businesses and their equipment. Antique shops are a no no. Try used restaurant equipment places and the like.
  On another note the big bandage is off and the stitches come out on Wednesday. Should have the project done in a week or so. I will do both with the same mount and include a large turquoise nugget for the center. I think you will like it.

Thanks Reb,heal up don't think about it.Let me know what ya need..As a matter of fact there was one in a thrift shop down the road.I'm a little afraid of having glass in here becuase of my leg,it sort of goes out underneath me once and awhile,sure as heck that's right where i would end up.My wife bought glass top coffee and end tables for the living room,i don't spend much time in there.That being said,it would be the perfect thing..

 If I took the knives, miniture artillery, gambling paraphenailia, Hiram's Rangers shrines, etc., out of my bookcases, I might be able to eliminate the piles of books on the floor.

I have a old circa 1948 Encyclopedia Britannica two tier glass front case, actually is made of walnut and solid brass hinges.
My Mother bought it will the books the year they came out.

Hi Rick,

The only suggestion I had came from Chuck Burrows ... I was having a very slight oxidation problem with the Damascus bowie he 'improved' for me ....
When I asked him, his answer was not to store knives in leather sheaths, 'cause the slight moisture in the leather can cause some surface oxidation ... probably an overprecaution, but worth mentioning ...

I use a mineral oil that is sold in wood shops for use on cutting blocks ... it is totally edible yet is a mineral oil....

Well about 10yrs. ago or so the wife and I were taking care of our Grand kids for the weekend and our Daughter and Son inlaw
brought it to us when they came to pick up the kids,don't know were they got that old bear but he has been standing guard over

What is a Meateater Bee Hive?

It's a type of hornet we have up at the big redwoods here,they have hives like yours up in the trees,that is a hive in the pic isn't it? Ours are little yellow boogers and the eat meat,especially when ya go to bar-b-quein or makin a sandwich,they will land on ya and take a hunk out of your arm and it hurts like the dickins!! When we camp we hang hot dogs on a string above a bowl of soapy water,they will eat till they can't fly and fall in the water and the soap keeps them put.

Last time i went bear huntin(campin) when we got ready to leave there was a hive up in a tree above us,right before we left i put a target arrow right through one,then we jumped in the trucks and made tracks================>

Dang meat bees  drove us nuts! I saw where one guy made a cage from screen material and captured some hornets,took different colored poster paper and tore it up and threw it in the cage with the hornets and they made a nest out of the different colors.

I just saw this thread but would like to add something since I am a knifemaker. Chuck Burrows is correct in his advice not to store knives in their sheaths. Even though we use top quality vegetable tanned leather for sheaths and holsters storing a knife (even a stainless knife) in a sheath can cause problems. Most of this depends on how clean and dry the sheath and blade was when it was put away and the conditions in which it is stored but the best bet is to store them outside their sheath for long periods.

This is especially important if you live in humid parts of the country and/or don't have a climate controlled safe or vault.

I personally saw a knife collection a couple years ago that was ruined from being stored in their sheaths in a trunk. To make things worse it was in Florida along the coast. The owner had collected knives from big name makers and even some of the stainless knives were rusted to the point of pitting. I personally held knives from Loveless, Warenski, Lile, Hibben just to name a few and it just made you sick to see them. Knives that would have been worth thousands if still in pristine condition.
