Looking for opinions:
Some of the CAS clubs I've been attending are hosting "Mid range" matches or "Cody Dixon" matches. If you haven't shot these, it involves traditional rifle caliber long guns (45-70, etc...), usually shot off hand at modest distances (75 to 200 yards).
I find that most of your serious BPCR buffalo guns that weight 11 to 13 pounds are just not a good choice for this (like my Browning BPCR). While those rifles are a joy over cross sticks or in position shooting, they just weigh to dang much to be off hand shooting all day.
I'm considering picking up a light weight rifle or carbine that will be a little lighter and shorter for these mid range matches. I'm thinking of a rifle that was designed for off-hand shooting. It should have a barrel no longer than 22" and weigh no more than 8 pounds.
It'll need to be in 45-70, cause that is my poison of choice. (And yes, I know the light rifle will kick more . . . that's what buttpads are for.)
Three I'm looking at:
1) A Winchester/Miroku 1886 Extra Light carbine.
2) A Pedersoli Sharps Carbine
3) A Winchester/Miroku 1885 Hi Wall Trapper.
Any other thoughts about these three or perhaps another rifle I need to think about?
