Green River Knives
« on: May 03, 2010, 09:44:13 PM »
I have always been interested in the number of different style blades that were available from Green River. I have three different ones and would like to find some info on exactly what was available and their time frames.

Here is one of mine that I found the other day in an old box of renedevous gear. The handles were broken and the blade was chipped, as you can see, so I did a little refit and reshaping on the handles  to bring it back to life.
Lost..... I ain't never been lost...... fearsome confused fer a month er two once... but I never been lost.

Thanks Rick. I hate to see a good knife go to waste and I think she looks pretty good with them osage orange slabs on' er. The chip in the blade actually worked out to look pretty good after a slight rework and deburring  ;D

GB,

Is the blade marked Russell Green River Works?  Most butcher knives from the period had 5 or on the larger one 6 small iron pins holding the handle on the blade.  The ones with the 2 or 3 brass rivets are mostly after 1900.

When I started making knives I would buy Green River blade blanks from Dixie Gun Works and put handles on them.  I gave tham all away over time.  I find them to be excellent working blades and I like the style.  Most of the handles I made were curly maple, buffalo horn and stag.   You knife is a keeper.  Don't give it away like I did.

Dr Bob , at one time you could still make out "Green River"  on the blade. It was etched, but it is long since disappeared. I figure the knifes actual age at about 40 yrs.

Messerist, I think thats how this one started out.
